Searching for Info

Hello Everyone, I've joined this site hoping to get more info on how to raise and take better care of my iggies. I have a 4 1/2 yr old male green Iguana named Georgie and a 2 yr old female ? named Moe. I'm not sure what species Moe is. That's one of the reasons I'm here. She's a lot smaller than Georgie. He weighs in at 17 lbs. She's about 5 lbs and has a longer face. She also has blue bands on her tail and her color is aquamarine. She also has sharp little teeth. I've had Georgie since he was a few weeks old, Moe came to me in Jan. as a rescue. I've tried to take pics of them but for some reason going near either of them with a digital camera sends them into a frenzy. They were caged separately but Moe caused damage to her nose trying to get out so we moved her into Georgie's cage. Until we got Moe, we were told Georgie was female but that proved to be wrong as he went into heat within days. Even tho we didn't breed them Moe laid 17 eggs about a week after moving into other cage.

I would appreciate any info or help I can get in making sure they lead healthy happy lives.
I live in a rural area that doesn't have a Vet that deals in exotics so I'm trying to keep them as healthy as I can with help from other LIZARD LOVERS.
Thanks for having a site I can turn to for help.

Re: Searching for Info

We have some knowledgeable Iguana owners here. I don't happen to be one. But I'll welcome you to Herp Center.

Re: Searching for Info

Welcome to HerpCenter! There are a number of long time iguana slaves here!
Green iguanas are one species. There are minor differences in appearance based on the geographical area from which they originated.

One is twice the age of the other so a size difference is to be expected. Add to that is the fact that one is a rescue and my not have had the best of care.

Many iguanas seem to dislike the cameras. I believe that this is a reaction to the infra red beam that cameras use to autofocus. Mine reacted the same way to my film SLR camera.
You might try takng the pictures after they are asleep for the night.

I would seriously reconsider housing them together. Iguanas are highly territorial and don't really care for each other being in their space. You are looking at a serious accident waiting to happen. The fact that there is a major difference in size is also a serious danger.

Re: Searching for Info

Welcome to HC!glad you joined. I wouldn't have them together either for the reason Merlin has stated. Most reptiles don't require or want buddies or friends and most are solitary and rather territorial when it comes to another, especially with igs.

Why take the risk of having serious injury or even death happen to them? Especially with the size difference as well. They can do a number on each other even if they seem to be getting along one day. The next day may not be so lucky.
