A Sad Beginning To a Great Way of Life

Well, my husband and I are newbie Uro enthusiasts from South Florida (West Palm actually, atm). We were introduced to the wonderful world of legged reptiles just recently, though we were both lovers of snakes already. We just lost a Uro yesterday, that was given to us by a neighbor. Turns out he was already ill when we received him, and though we only had him for two months, we had both grown very attached to our little Izzy.

He was silly and fun and so very sweet. He was also a very laid back "chill" buddy. We loved him deeply and are grateful to have had Izzzy touch our lives. The best part of the pairing is that Izzy had a great last two months of life. He was happy as a clam with us, since we loved much more actively than his previous keepers. I just wish we had known more about how to properly care for him. He began having seizures yesterday and some very panicky research showed that he had never in his life been cared for properly.

My husband and I have learned a valuable lesson: always do research when you are introduced to a new animal, no matter how much you may trust the person from whom you are getting the animal. Being a good person doesn't automatically make someone properly informed. As Izzy could attest, ignorance can be dangerous.

The best thing that we have gotten out of this tragedy is a deep appreciation for these wonderful, gentle creatures and a desire to learn all we can about them and to give them the best life we possibly can. We will be looking for a little Izzy Jr. soon, since we both feel our minds and hearts have been expanded from the experience of meeting and loving our little friend. After having, even briefly this amazing creature in our world we now believe that a life without a Uro in it would be less than complete.

So to make a long story somewhat longer, we would like to say "howdy" and "hello" to all of you fellow lovers of all kinds of reptiles. Here's to lizard kisses, snake kisses and kisses from all of our scaly friends (which are, ofc, kisses like no other ). Who says that cute and lovable has to be fuzzy? RIP Izzy. We will never forget you, our gentle little buddy...
