Here's Another Newbie

Hello!
My name's Ekavi, I'm from Quebec Canada (though currently living in Toronto) and I'm really excited about my new baby corn snake! Sites like these are such a comfort to me.

He (or she, too young to tell) is about 1 month old, and I researched alot about him before I bought him and so far, the only problem I've run into is concerning the temperature gradient.
I know the warm side should be kept around 80-85F and the cool side around 70-79F (and cooler at night) but my corn snake seems loath to go anywhere near the warm side and only stays on the cool side.
I've never seen him go on the warm side, but when I turn off the heating I'll see him there, or usually when I turn it on he'll slither away.
I've tried a heat pad, basking light, and a low-watt UVB bulb but he just likes the cool side (which is about 72-75 degrees F)

Is there something wrong? I know he's nocturnal so maybe he doesn't like light? I dont think it's urgent since he's eating and acting fine, but can anyone tell me if it's ok to just leave the heating off or not?

Thanks so much!

Re: Here's Another Newbie

Welcome to Herp Center! I would advise against turning the heat off unless you can maintain a heat gradient without it. Your snake will only use the warm end when he/she feels it is necessary. They know their requirements more than we do, so it's best to let them decide what they require and when. If you remove the heat source, and the snakes core temperature has dropped too low and it wishes to elevate it again, it wont have that option.

Re: Here's Another Newbie

welcome to HC! glad you joined. i'm with Rich on this one. if you can't maintain a proper heat gradient without the heat then please leave it on. alot of times my corns will only stay on the cool side and sometimes the warm side. and since you said he's new he may still be adjusting. you want to maintain the proper temperatures so he can digest properly. if its too cool they can't digest and you risk a regurge because the food will rot in their stomachs.

you can also check out the caresheet for corns we have here and also the corn snake forums. good luck with him/her!

Welcome to HerpCenter!
I too advise to keep your heating up. The snake may be using the hot area when you aren't around.
What size of tank are you using and how do you have it equipped? do you have any hides?
Being a new hatchling it will be shy and will prefer to be hidden most of the time.
My snakes tend to prefer the cool end except after feeding.
