Re: Complete Newby
I wouldn't even bother with a brackish tank that the garter will be using. I am not aware of them feeding in brackish water in the wild. The salinity may be too high for them. You would require fresh water for drinking.
I am not 100% certain that they wouldn't drink the brackish water. The consumption of the high salinity could result in deydration. Hopefully someone else who knows more about this topic will chime in. |

Re: Complete Newby
I also would advise against the brackish water.
A diet solely based on fish is harmful. You would be better advised to try to get it to take mouse pinkies.

Re: Complete Newby
I know exactly what you're talking about
They don't hunt by site, but he can smell and taste that there are fish in there (or were). The crab probably emits a fishy smell too. Or he could remember that's where he found the molly and is looking for more. Either that or he just assumes water = fish and is searching anyway. But what he's doing when he waves all around underwater with his mouth open is he's waiting to bump into a fish. As soon as he does, he'll snap down on it. They don't normally do that unless they have a reason to think there are fish in there though.Having a large water area for him to explore is a good idea. Having that water habitat be brackish is a bad idea, so if you want to keep the aquarium in there, I'd move your crab and any other brackish fish out to a new habitat away from the garter.

Welcome to HC! Post pics when you can. Love garter snakes but don't have any. Always watched the wild ones up at the lake...they are fast little guys in the water!

Re: Complete Newby
Hey be carefull. Feeding him just fish and tadpoles can malnurish him, you need to give him a vitamin powder every so often. As soon as he is big enough start feeding him pinkies(babie mice) there are many benifits, they defecate less often and it doesnt smell as bad, it isnt as runny, also you dont have to feed them as often, and you wont have to give it vitamin power. The only draw back is it may be hard to train it to eat them. If you have a problem feeding it live pinkies then you can buy frozen ones, these are even harder to get them to eat.
