Hello Everyone!

Hey guys, I'm new to this site!
I am currently researching chameleons and have some questions. I want to know what the best breed is for a beginner and the best enclosure. I was considering the package deal with a baby veiled or a flap-neck on lllreptiles.com. Are the supplies and enclosure in this package sufficient and are these the best kinds of chameleons for me?
I have read the care sheets and, honestly, I am feeling a little overwhelmed by all of the stuff. Am I going to be unable to occasionally go out of town for a few days without my cham getting dehydrated? Is there a good mister or fogger that I don't have to refill every day? Thanks in advance for your help!
Kirsten

Re: Hello Everyone!

Welcome to Herpcenter. I dont think there is a beginner breed of Chams, most are fragile and stress easy. How about a leo or Bearded Dragon

Re: Hello Everyone!

Chams are some of the most difficult reptiles out there. VERY particular. The only people I hear of having massive success are those that live in california or hawaii where they can be kept outside. They need both humidity AND airflow.

If you had a room you could keep them in and have it be warm (space heater) and damp (humidifier) that would be your best bet.

The other thing you would need to do, is get your setup together FIRST and get the temps and humidity regulated for a few months, then add the inhabitant.

Do you keep any other herps? Welcome to the board.

Re: Hello Everyone!

To be honest, I'm a little uneasy with anything that runs real fast. I've had snakes in the past, so I'm not a complete beginner as far as herps. I've just always wanted a chameleon, ever since I was little and my brother in law (who was a professional wildlife photographer) showed me his. I'm finally in a financial position to own one now... though I'm also considering frogs (tree or dart). I'm a wildlife conservation major by the way... so I'm all about learning husbandry techniques. Do you recommend frogs over chams? Thanks and nice to meet ya!

Re: Hello Everyone!

Ssssh, dont say frogs infront of Liz, lol. Frogs are awesome and I am getting into them myself and I would definitely try those before a cham. I've always wanted one to but dont think I have the knack for them.

Re: Hello Everyone!

Does the whites tree frog caresheet apply to other types of tree frogs like red eye and clown?

Re: Hello Everyone!

Oh yeah, is it better to get a screen reptarium or a glass one like the naturalistics kind?

Re: Hello Everyone!

no, most frogs have very specific care. This is a wonderful site with lots of frog care sheets.

Well, some frogs have similar care, but only those from the same areas. For instance, whites come from a different area than red eyes.

Amphibiancare.com >> Care Sheets
