New to Geckos New to Chat
We received a 3 month leopard gecko as a gift in Nov., that would make her (we think her) about 7 months now. She is 8 inches from tip to tail. Her tail is nice and fat and spongy. We have her in a large aquarium with carpet botttom, two hides, water, calcium, and mealworms. She eats 2-3 crickets almost daily, occaisionally we skip or she doesn't eat. She sheds about every two weeks and eats her skin (gag). We have heat pad under one side and a bright light one that side as well, the other side has her cooler night light. We have had a hard time keeepng her cage over 70 degrees. Humidity is not an issue. She has two hides, one on each side of the cage. I am wondering what else I should be doing for her? Nutrionally? with her habitat? My nine year old loves to handle her, she is very careful but is that ok? Any info would be appreciated.

have our leo care sheet. For added heat, you could install a ceramic heat emitter or use a higher wattage bulb.

Re: New to Geckos New to Chat
How are you measuring temps? The recommended method is a digital thermometer with a probe resting on the surface of the tank bottom (so on the carpet in your tank). Those thermometers that stick on the side of the tank, whether digital or analog, aren't useful at all. The temp several inches off the surface, on the tank glass, isn't what you need to know. So try getting a digital probe thermometer (or an infrared temp gun) and see what you find out -- your tank may have the right temps after all. It sounds like it's set up just fine. I don't know what size tank you have, but in order to get a good temp gradient, you'll want something like a 20-gallon long. This way there can be a significant enough heat difference between the warm and cool ends of the tank.
Show us some pics of your little friend! We'd love to see! And welcome!

Re: New to Geckos New to Chat
Welcome! Are you gut loading the crickets at all, or dusting them with calcium/vitamins every few days? That is about the only other thing I could suggest based on the info you gave - sounds like you are doing a great job! And, yes, it is OK for your daughter to handle your gecko as long as she is gentle, which it sounds like she is! If she ever stops eating or starts losing weight, it could be a sign of stress and you may not want to handle her if that happens, but that is pretty unlikely from handling alone if she is already used to you guys. Handling him/her for a little while each day, or a few times a week is completely fine for adjusted, healthy leo's.
