Newbie- Iguana Questions

Hey everyone, I will be geting my Iggy in a couple of weeks and feel a little overwhelmed with all the info. A friend gave my a 30 gallon tank (I know I will have to upgrade). I'm still confused on how to put the lights up. Also, I work the 2pm-10pm shift. I will get up early to feed him/her. Can I feed him/her before I leave or when I get home? Is 10:30pm to late?

Re: newbie

Hi and welcome. You are correct, that 30 gallon isn't going to last more than a few months.

As for lights, set them so they are on a 12 on/12 off timer. I think you should feed him before you go to work, but someone will chime in. I'm not an ig owner, just an ig follower.

Welcome

Re: newbie

Food in the morning for sure.

A 30g really isn't even sufficient for a hatchling iguana.

What lights have you got so far?
If you don't have a UVB light yet you should definitely check out Welcome To ReptileUV - Mega-Ray® UVB lamps for reptile lighting worldwide, the megarays are top of the line and a great price.

Welcome to HerpCenter! Iguanas are a complicated animal to keep but they are worth it if you are up to it.
There are several of us that are longtime iguana slaves!
That 30 gal is already too small. The minimum for even a hatchling is a 55 gal and you will be lucky if that lasts a year. Any smaller and it becomes impossible to supply the necessary heat gradient.
Check out our care page

Re: newbie

Welcome to the ig servants club. As far as your ig is concerned, we only exist to do their bidding.

As was mentioned, the enclosure will definitely need some work. Check out the links to the care sheet, and do a search on iguana cages here. People have created some amazing enclosures, and are always willing to help you with whatever you need to get started on your own.

Re: Newbie- Iguana Questions

I would say to get your Ig on schedule with you, like if you stay up real late after work then turn your lights on at 2pm and off at 2 AM and feed her in the morning before you go to work.
