Re: Newbie- Iguana Questions

following the natural day and night cycle as much as possible is what is best for them. If you leave the lights off until 2 in the afternoon and feed in the morning, it will not want to eat until the afternoon, then you have greens that have been sitting for hours before it decides it wants to eat them,, yuck. I agree with the timers. they are wonderful! They work great for all my iguanas.

Re: Newbie- Iguana Questions

That would only work if there is absolutely no ambient light in the room. IE Windows, room lights etc. The room must be pitch dark.
And you can't do it all at once. We are talking about altering it by say 30 minutes to an hour each week.
Otherwise you thouroughly upset the ig and stress it out.
Its like someone that goes from working days to working the night shift.
Its rough on them for a while but we have the ability to reason and can basicly force ourselves to sleep and adjust to the new schedule.
The iguana doesn't have this ability so you have to take it by baby steps.

Re: Newbie- Iguana Questions

I agree that you should get a light timer. That will be the very best solution for you and the iguana. It will come on automatically in the morning so you don't have to get up early, and it will go off before you get home from work, and your iguana can sleep comfortably. You should feed him before you go to work. Iguanas rarely eat at night, and 10:30 is a little late for them. I usually feed mine once before work (around 8 in the morning), and another small meal after I get home around 6 or 7. He generally goes to sleep some time around 9. If I feed him any later than 7:30, he won't eat at all.

Every ig is different, of course, but they all like their routines. Having a regular schedule for day, night, feeding and baths - even cage cleaning - will make your iguana feel safer with you.

Re: Newbie- Iguana Questions

Hi, Iguanas require UVB in order to process calcium in their bodies. Some people use one light bulb for heat and one light bulb for UVB (usually a flourescent bulb) There are also bulbs out there that produce heat and UVB (Mercury Vapor bulbs like Powersun UV or Megaray) It is really your choice...hope this helps out a bit...

Re: Newbie- Iguana Questions

whichever UVB bulb you choose, be sure its the most UVB out there you can get. I have seen on packaging they go from 2.0 to 10.0 and the 2.0 is pretty much worthless.

I would suggest mega ray bulbs. Welcome To ReptileUV - Mega-RayŽ UVB lamps for reptile lighting worldwide
