New to the Forum

Hello-

My name is Chris and I'm completely new to the HC Network. I have recently become obsessed with tree frogs. I now have 7!! of various species but they all get along quite well. I also have 10 full sized Fire belly toads and 2 baby ones!! I just purchased a red legged running frog from my local pet store and it (not sure how to determine sex) is fasinating!!

I house my tree frogs in the Exo Terra 18 X 18 X 24 Terrarium with a Compact Flourscent UVA & UVB bulb. I am using a under tank heater to provide a warming/basking spot and misting at least once a day to keep the humidity semi stable @ 70%. I am feeding every other day about 15 medium crickets, dusted once weekly. I have a Grey Tree frog (Bob short for Ribbert), a green tree frog (Jake), 2 Cuban tree frogs (Fidel & Castro), a Peacock tree frog (Ralphie), a Vietnamese BLUE tree frog (Saphira) and today's BIRTHDAY gift, a Red Legged Running Frog (Coco). I have gone to several recent reptile expos in the area over the last few months and have learned quite a bit. I am always willing to learn more and am very open to any info anyone wants to share with me.

Hope to hear from other members soon!!!

Hi Chris! Welcome to HC!
Do you have all those frogs in one enclosure?

Re: New to the Forum

Hi Chris, welcome to HC. I too am curious if you are housing different species together.

Hi Chris, and welcome! There is a poison dart frog breeder in your neck of the woods around Grand Rapids I think.

Re: New to the Forum

hi and welcome.

I need to have a talk with you about mixing species..... Its NOT a good idea. not only do some of those frogs have different needs, but sooner or later someone is going to eat someone else. Plus, it actually stresses the frog out even though you can't tell.

Plus that one tiny cage isn't big enough for half of those frogs, even though they were the same species. That tank is only 25 gallons. each frog needs 10 at the bare minimum. I would suggest getting a few 29 gallon tanks and separating the species.

PLUS, they don't need uvb since most treefrogs are nocturnal.

Sorry to barrage you...

Welcome. HAPPY BIRTHDAY!

We are glad to have you in the neighborhood, but as stated above you have to much in one tank.

Gray Tree Frog
** Although gray tree frogs are nocturnal and usually remain motionless during the day, at night they become very active and will use all of the room they are provided with in captivity. A 15 gallon high aquarium that measures 20 inches long by 10 inches wide by 18 inches high (51cm by 25cm by 46cm) is large enough for two adult frogs, although more room is better.
**They can tolerate temperatures as low as 50F (10C) and as high as 90F (32C) for short periods of time without harm. Ideally the cage should be kept between 68F and 78F (20C and 26C) during the day with a slight drop in temperature at night.
**They are not tropical amphibians and do not require humid conditions

Green Tree Frog
**A 15 gallon high aquarium that measures 20 inches long by 10 inches wide by 18 inches high (51cm by 25cm by 46cm) is large enough for up to three adult frogs, although more room is better.
**During the day the cage should stay between 72F and 80F (22C and 26.5C). At night the temperature in the cage can drop to 65F (18C) without harm.
**Generally misting the cage with water a few times a week is enough to maintain a humidity level of around 50% in most areas.

Cuban Tree Frogs
**A 20 gallon extra high aquarium that measures 20 inches long by 24 inches high by 10 inches wide (50 cm by 61 cm by 25 cm) would be large enough for two adult frogs, although more room is better.
**The ideal temperature during the day will range from 78F to 88F (26C to 31C). The night time temperature can drop to 65F (18C) without harm.
**The humidity should remain high (70-90%) during most of the year because these frogs are native to tropical areas.

Peacock frog(not the best information but one of the few I could find... Can't say how reliable the information is tho.
**A 15-gallon tank would be adequate for a group of 4 adults.
**The tank will need to be heated to a daytime temperature of 24 - 26°C (=75-79F)with a drop at night to 20 - 22°C.
** humidity should be about 50-60% (someones guess)

I can't find any care sheets for the Vietnamese Blue tree frog...

http://www.herpcenter.com/amphibians...-maculata.html also couldn't find much about the Red legged Running frog, but seems some of our other members might know something about it...
