Introductions in order..
Hello, I'm a student (sort of) who lives in Annapolis, Md. I am looking into becoming a zoology major, or perhaps animal behavior, and hope to someday work with carnivorous mammals. So, I've had some type of animal, or animals as far back as I can remember. When I was little it was rodents, then birds, and for along time I was mainly doing fish, I still have 2 fish tanks up and running, (One 65 gallon with a jaguar cichlid in it, and a twenty tall with a small jack dempsey and a convict) but less then a year back I bought a Schneiders Skink. I found it incredibly interesting, and can still spend hours just sitting next to his tank watching him (I am not positive it's a male, but I call it him anyway). He is doing good, in a twenty gallon long, and has quite a nice habitat. A few weeks back I was given a gecko by someone, who was not certain what type of lizard it was, I knew it was some type of wall or house gecko, so I took it home, and looked it up online. It ended up being a White spotted Wall Gecko. So now I'm at two lizards, and am still getting all the nuts and bolts completely squared off with his tank. (I have this compulsion about occasionaly changing something around in my animals enclosures, it just has to be perfect) I have a rather cool 10 gallon set up that just needs an inhabitant and a heat source, and after that will probaly either get a leapord gecko (I find them very interesting) or perhaps tackle a cuban Knight Anole. I'm sure I will call on many here for advice, and would like to thank everyone ahead of time, and perhaps will give out advice of my own. I would appreciate any feedback about either species, or about some small reptile that would be comfortable in a 10 gallon tank, with artificial grass covering about 65%+ of the floorspace.
Thanks, Ryan |

Re: Introductions in order..
Welcome to the board local fellow Marylander! A baby leopard gecko would do good for a while, but really a 10 gallon tank isn't sufficiant for many things. They simply get too big. I'm always biased, but there area few frogs out there who would do fine in a 10 gallon, however it would be a bigger setup than just reptile carpet.

Re: Introductions in order..
Welcome to Herp Center....I believe a 10 gal would be too small for either a leo or cuban knight anole. A couple of regular green anoles would be ok in there. Cuban anoles simply get too large for that size tank....good luck with your quest...and enjoy yourself here!

Re: Introductions in order..
welcome to HC! glad you joined. i with the others that not too many things can be put in a 10 gallon and live comfortably through its life. if you have the available space for another 20 long that would be better for a leo. there's tons of info here and you're always free to ask questions you might have. whatever you decide we'd love some pics!

Re: Introductions in order..
Thank you all for the warm welcome, I thought i'd clear up a few things real quick, The 10 gallon tank is not artificial grass, It is the expandable coconut substrate, with a dried flower grass stuck throughout the tank. It actually looks something like a bit of an actual grassland, with tall grass. And The Cuban Knight Anole and Leopard Gecko, would definitly have larger enclosures, They are future projects, for now I want to find something that would stay small for the 10 gallon. Something closer to a Green Anole's size.
Thank you all for the tips though. |

Re: Introductions in order..
Welcome. With a ten gallon, you'll need to find something that's not only small, but doesn't need much of a heat gradient. (Difficult to get in a 10 g) Green anoles or some types of frogs are probably your best bet.
Personally, I'd save it as a feeder tank - something that you could put the animal and its prey into for a little while to eat, and then separate them again. I find something like that handy because you know how much your animal is eating and the crickets or mealworms don't have a chance to hide themselves in your main tank and breed or bite the reptile. But that's just me.
