new to reptiles

Hey all

I've just recently started keeping reptiles. I have always had an interest but never actively done anything about it. At present I just have a 9mth old female Bearded Dragon but soon hope to increase my collection once room permits. I have been considering a companion for her although am unsure, i understand I could house her with another female for companionship or with a male for breeding. i have however been told that breeding can cause some problems is this right

Re: new to reptiles

Males mature faster than females. She is too young to breed. Each time a female breeds it shortens their life span. You also can get mutlipe clutches from one breeding, causing you to have too many babies and if space is an issue, that will be an issue as well. It's best to pair her with another female the same size.

Re: new to reptiles

Welcome to HC! Bearded Dragons are great!

Your Bearded Dragon really doesn't need or want a companion. Reptiles in general are solitary animals.
You don't want to keep the male and one female together. They will breed constantly and it will be very stressful on the female both physically and mentally to be constantly breeding. There is also the possibilty of aggression.
And you need to quarantine any new aquisition for at least 30-60 days before you put the new addition in with your current pet to make sure you aren't introducing any disease or parasite organisms.
