Re: hi.. im new and need advice
I know nothing about tegus, but you could post about him and what his current living conditions are. Someone who knows tegus will chime in with pointers.
welcome!

Re: hi.. im new and need advice
Hi! I am owned by a Columbian Tegu. Her name is Zena Warrior Princess, and describes the attitude. Are you looking at a Columbian Tegu or an Argentine Tegu? They can take a lot of work to tame down, although the Argentinian Tegu are supposed to have a mild mannered personality. You have to be ready for a large reptile, as they grow fast. Zena is about 1 year now. When I have her loose in the house with me she wears doll diapers, as she is not potty trained. She does like going outside to go to the bathroom though. We feed Monitor/Tegu food by ZuPreem at the advice of several of our reptile vets. I am trying to get her to eat just a few greens, but she doesn't like them. She had a very bad attitude when I got her at 8 months, but is a sweetie now. She's spoiled and knows it. She has basking lights, UVB lights, a big enough bowl she can crawl inside and soak. (she will be getting a larger cage in the near future, but things in the house have to be rearranged first). She loves attention and watching the compute as it changes. If you would like to see a few pics of her go to the picture gallery and look under barnkat
Feel free to ask questions, I will answer what I know. I bought a book to help me since there's not a lot of info, and also talked to several veterinarians. Do some research online and make sure you want to take on this reptile first.

Re: hi.. im new and need advice
welcome to HC! glad you joined. you'll definitely want to do your research on the animal first to make sure you are able to properly care for it and have the right size enclosure especially when it reaches adult size. its a good idea also to have the enclosure set up first with the proper temps and everything so you're not scrambling around last minute when you have the reptile to make sure everything is right. good luck!

Re: hi.. im new and need advice
Welcome to Herp Center. Tegus are beautiful reptiles but can be a handful especially when they reach full size.

Re: hi.. im new and need advice
Work with her a lot to keep her tame. If she does bite you immediately spritz her in the face with vinegar. if it's not immediate, don't bother, it won't mean the same. Vinegar has worked wonders here. Also, if she bites you clean it right away and get antibiotic ointment on it, as infection can set in fast. That's from personal experience. LOL. I love the little monster anyway. And, she's not so little. Lots of luck, if you have questions ask, someone will try to answer

Re: hi.. im new and need advice
ughh!!!
alright... so ive been trying tot do all I can for this little girl, but she sooo stubborn! she gets all huffy and squirmy when I take her out of her cage and set her on the bed. Ive been trying to get her out of the cage at least once a day just to get her used to everything, but she doesnt act very friendly she hasnt shown any signs of wanting to bite, but im still not convinced she wont. And she's so grumpy when I wake her up lol, what does it mean when she breaths hard? and im not sure how to try and tame her, she's already about 3 feet long, and she's got a nice plump body, so im not sure if im out of luck trying to tame an older tegu im also not sure how her former owners treated her... and its really frustrating. Any advice out there to get her to like me a little more??? grr I want her to trust that im not trying to harm her, but I dont know how ![]() |
