New Mali Uromastyx owner
Well today we brought home our first reptile, a Mali Uromastyx. His name is Reggie and he is about 2 1/2 years old. Last week I took my two boys to several pets stores in search of a small snake. Upon our visit to the first store I stumbled across a Mali Uromastyx. I knew immediately that he was the next member of our family. I took my wife back to the store that evening and she too fell in love. Please keep in mind that until 2 weeks ago my wife would have NEVER had a reptile in the house. However, our youngest son cannot stop playing with fake snakes and lizards, plus he has to play with every reptile we find outside. So she finally agreed to look for a small snake for him. Well, there's still no snake but Reggie is officially a member of our family. We were going to wait until Christmas but we knew that Reggie was the one for us. Even though we found some uros at other store that were cheaper, it was Reggies personality and the helpfullness of the store staff that made it worth it (you can't beat good help). We knew that we had to get all the supplies for Reggie first but that still didn't stop my wife from going back and buying him...the store was kind enough to hold him for a couple days while we got the tank up to par. We are definately happy with our decision and look forward to many many years with Reggie. Who knows, if a Uromastyx can melt the heart of a spouse who used to be phobic of reptiles just think what one may do for you.

Re: New Mali Uromastyx owner
Welcome! I'm glad you're enjoying your new pet.
If you don't mind me asking, what is the setup you have for him? The reason I'm asking is that many pet stores make bad recommendations for how to care for your new reptile. This group here has a lot of really good information on the best kinds of substrate, lighting, etc. Oh, and here is our Uromastix caresheet: http://reptileguides.herpcenter.com/...-t43.html?t=43 Congratulations on your new little guy.

Re: New Mali Uromastyx owner
welcome to HC! glad you joined us. i used to work in a pet store and I know first hand some places don't have the correct info. thats part of why I joined HC! i've learned so much that I could pass on to customers about different herps they were interested in. sometimes you find a great place that knows what they're talking about and sometimes not. so its always important to check several sources to make sure what you have is right. there are some Uro keepers here and there is a caresheet so hopefully this place will also be useful to you! good luck with Reggie and I hope you enjoy him!

New Mali Uromastyx owner SETUP
Wow, thanks for such a great welcome to the world of reptiles.
Please keep in mind that this is our temporary setup until we build Reggie a bigger home (or should I say condo). Right now we have a 55 gallow terrarium 48"x18"x12". We are using aspen substrate. For lighting there is a 150 watt SunGlo UVA day spot and 26W ReptiGlo 10.0 UVB bulb. We have a flat rock that the day spot shines on and an even larger rock that the reptiglo shines on. Both bulbs are right beside each other. We have a pine arch and drift wood that we also bought at a pet store for Reggie to go under. His food is on the cool side. The Hot side runs about 98 degrees and I estimate between 120-130 on the direct spot. Humidity is 40% on the hot side. The cool side is around 75 degrees and 65% humidity. We put a dehumidifier in the room this evening to bring it down. We have a timer for the lights. I'm thinking about adding a black light bulb for a little extra heat at night during the winter. Reggie has had his first meal with us. Romane leaves with T-rex uromastic dust. I put some finch bird seed in the bottom of his bowl too. He took right to the rock and sunned himself a good bit. There isn't enough time to tell about all the neat things we've experienced so far but needless to say we are loving our little Reggie. |
