Welcome to the site Char!
You have to 'earn' the signature by participating in the community. Once you hit a certain posts you can create one.
It's our way of insuring that people don't just sign up to promote themselves.
So what do you keep?

Welcome Char! What sort of animals do you keep or are interested in?
As Lacey told you it takes a certain number of posts before you are able to post a signature. We had a problem with people joining only to post a link to promote their own site in a signature. Its just one of the steps we take to keep this site free of SPAM.
