New parents to BD's and leopard geckos
I'll try to keep this short ~ it could get long and confusing, lol! We set out to buy our son a leopard gecko for his "golden" birthday, which is 3 weeks away. He really wanted a leo as he has a cousin with one. After some researching I figured out that the BD's were a bit more likely to want to be held, which I figure he will want to do *a lot*! I have a friend who I work with who also runs a local pet store. We had all but told her we were going to buy the one leo she had in her store. Then we made the mistake of going to a franchise type of pet store and my son held the bd's. My hubby, son and I were smitten with them! So, we came home with a baby bearded dragon.
I tend to be overly sensetive and was concerned about my friend from work. I was explaining to my Mom that I wanted to get a leo anyway, and maybe give it to our next youngest son (we have 4 boys). The next thing I know she is calling me back to tell me that she went and bought 2 leopard geckos from the local pet store, and ordered us a 75 gallon tank!! She is, to say the least, awesome! So, my husband came home tonight with a second bd, not realizing that you can't house them together.... I feel bad, he was so excited. So, I'm sure we are in over our heads as we are quite new to this. I do have hermit crabs which, believe it or not, require specialized care (if you want them to live more than a few weeks) and hubby and I have both had snakes in the past ("bc" or "before children ) so we are not total reptile novices. I do have a few questions to start off with: for the bearded dragons, the lady at PetCo said eucalyptus shavings were safe because it is digestable. She really knew her stuff otherwise, but I question this one? Also, how long can the 2 babies stay together? We will watch for signs of aggression, but they were together at the pet store. For the leo's: we dont have them yet, she is keeping them at the store until we have a home to put them in. How long can they stay in a cage together? We don't know sex's on them. And, do they need the UVB lighting? I do understand that paper towel or news paper is best to use for substrate for them and plan to go that route. Also, how big of a tank will 2 leopard geckos need? I have no idea how old they are, but they are quite a bit larger than the "babies" at PetCO. That's all I have for now, sorry this got so long! Thanks in advance for any input! |

Re: New parents to BD's and leopard geckos
If the Bearded Dragons are babies they will be fine together for awhile. But they need to be on paper towels. No type of shaving is good nor digestable to my knowledge. Once you can sex the Bearded Dragons if they are 2 males they need to be seperated. Do you have all the special lighthening for them and what size tank.
A 75 gl is quite big for 2 small Leopard Geckos, they would do fine in a 20 gl long. The same rule applies to them for sexing and males cannot be together. They do not need uvb but it wont hurt them either. Do you have all you need for both Bearded Dragons and Leopard Geckos?

Re: New parents to BD's and leopard geckos
You could easily section a 75 gallon tank into two nice separate tanks for the little leopard geckos, having too much wide open space will just seeve to freak them out, so make sure they have lots of cover.

Welcome to HerpCenter!
Leopard Geckos and Bearded Dragons are both great beginner's lizards and very easy to keep once you get all your basics figured out.

Re: New parents to BD's and leopard geckos
Thanks for the quick replies! The idea with the 75gallon was for the original bearded dragon, once it got big enough. Now we have to re-think a bit and decide who will be put in what. I have a 20L but there are 8 hermit crabs ranging from jumbo to small in it, so I think they will have to stay put. I'm checking with some people to see if they might have a 10g that I could borrow for a while. The Bearded Dragons are in a 10g with a UVA/UVB light, heat lamp and log. They can go into the 75 when I get it, then the leo's into the 10g? Would the same set up be OK for the leo's (minus the UV lighting) for a while?
So, do I understand right: the Bearded Dragons will be OK if they are not both male? Should be hope they are both female? I don't want to be a breeder, we have enough human little ones, lol! And if by some luck they are compatible, is the 75 going to be too small when they are full grown? We'll have to start saving, if so! I'll get rid of the eucalyptus (I have no idea how to spell that without looking) and put down some paper towel. OK, I think that's all for now. I promise I will slow down with the questions in a few weeks ![]() |

Re: New parents to BD's and leopard geckos
A 75 gl will be fine for 2 adult Bearded Dragons and yes you want them to be female
But the Bearded Dragons should be in the 10 gl for to long. It is to hard to get the temps right for them with that small of an area. Depending on how big the Leopard Geckos are depends on if they will be able to stay in the 10 gl.

We hope to have the 75 in, at the most, 2 weeks, probably less. When we get the geckos I will measure them and check back with you all as far as size and their habitat size. Thanks again! |
