Hello from the Indiana!!

My name is Paul. Just got two Geckos this past week for pets for the kids. My youngest is allergic to the hairy pets that my wife and I used to having as we have grown up. The coolest thing...the kids thoughts of how cute these little guys are has actually been rubbing off on me. To tell you the truth I never thought that I would ever have the desire to pick up, hold, or feed live crickets to anything that resembled a snake or other slithering reptile. I held them today for the first time and I had to do it again.

The kids are young so they are having a rough time realizing that they are going to have to wait for a while for the Leopard Geckos to tame a little. I actually had the bigger one (my son has named Hot Wheels) hiss at me. The smaller, younger one (my daughter has named Aurora - she loves the Disney Princesses) has been a real joy to hold. Maybe that will change as she gets older but then again if I continue to hold her, that should not happen. If anyone has any tips other thatn just holding the more aggressive one a little at a time in the tank only...I am all ears. Thanks, and Hello to all!!

Paul

Re: Hello from the Indiana!!

Hello Paul. Im also from Indiana. Theres a few other people here that are from this area. (glad we got the well needed rain)

If they are abit mean just handle them a bit at a time and they will relax some. Ive gotten mine since they were babies and they are like dogs now. My male likes his head scratched. It just takes time.

What area of Indiana are you in?

Re: Hello from the Indiana!!

Hello,

Welcome to the HC Network! As Steve stated, leopard geckos are very placid animals. The hiss is a defensive mechanism. From a leopard geckos "low to the ground" view, you are a predator with the ability to cause him harm.

After a week or 3, lol, the leo will relax. Once it realizes you are not intent on eating or harming him, he will become very accustomed to you.

Instead of reaching into the enclosure and trying to pick him up, you can try placing your hand in the enclosure and just leave it there allowing him to come to you. It will take some patience, but it is very effective. I have several leopard geckos that will readily jump at the opportunity to climb on my hand and come out for a visit.

Leopard geckos are great critters and are excellent beginner species.

If you haven't already seen it, we have a caresheet located here: Leopard Gecko Caresheet

Feel free to post any questions you have in our leopard gecko forum!
