Re: newbie here with question about new cwd enlosu

Hello,

Welcome to the HC Network!
In the enclosure section of the site found here: http://www.herpcenter.com/general-construction/ , start a new thread asking for assistance with building an enclosure. Tell them your budget, what tools you have access to, how large you want it to be, etc. I am certain you will get some feedback as well as some enclosure examples.

Re: newbie here with question about new cwd enlosu

i don't do dollars so carn't help on materials cost , but you will be pleased to know that most enclosure can be made from scrap / recycle material and it's best to find the glass for the doors and a cheap fish tank the bigger the better as long as it is water tight and build the frame on top to fit the glass doors instead of getting glass to fit your enclosure as this will cost money.
here's roughly how I made mine ;
1 - find a fish tank , mine is 5' long 1' wide 18" deep
2 - find two pains of glass that put side by side measure more than 5' mine are 3' by 4' pains so making the doors 4' high
3 - find some plywood or plastic coated chipboard to use for sides , back , and top ( plain chipboard or osb ORIATED STRANDED CHIPBOARD is no good as it will fall to pieces when wet , my cut plan was .
2 times 1' by 4'
1 times 5' by 4'
1 times 1' by 5'
4 next cut 2" by2" timber and make two square frames one to fit the glass panels in with the sliders ( put these in when making the frame ) and one to frame the back panel and secure the square frame to the back panel using nails , my frames were 5' by 4' .
5 next step to build the cabinet , do this bit on the floor not on the fish tank , and nail all the sides together and when finished place aquarium silicon on the top of the tank and put the cabinet on top of it so making it water tight and place the structure on a plywood board under the tank and you can half fill with water when ready.
6 seal all gaps inside with aquarium silocan and leave to dry then decorate with branches and all lighting / heating
7 just add dragons
i hope this is as clear as mud but it's the best way I could think of saying it

Re: newbie here with question about new cwd enlosu

i find lots of used critter tanks for sale on craigs list super cheap. The last one I saw was a 75 gallon tank for $40. Usually the cheap ones say they don't hold water, which isn't important to you.

Re: Questions about new cwd enlosure

Welcome.

I find old furniture is GREAT for converting to cages. For instance, you can take out the drawers from a dresser and add some lighting, ventillation holes and a plexiglass door to the front, and you've got a new cage, for very very cheap. (There's a little more to it than that, but it gives you an idea.)

Old furniture is pretty easy to find for cheap at yard sales or thrift stores, if you don't have something just laying around that you can use. I find that takes care of the structural work, and the rest is usually smaller stuff that can be done with a drill or screwdriver.

One thing to keep in mind is that your water dragon can get up to three feet long, I think. (Double check me on that. I can never remember measurements or numbers of any kind. That's why I have so many books and caresheets to refer to.) He's going to need room to move around, room to climb, and room to swim. Also keep in mind that you've got to keep the humidity up for him.
