Introduction

Hello, I am here because my of my son. He is 14 and homeschooled. He has one anole in a 10 gallon. Now we are looking at geckos. Specifically a Leo. I did see a fat tail today at PetSmart. From what I have read that time seems more timid so I think we will stick with learning about the Leo. We have a 20 gallon tank. Screen lid is on back order. Trying to figure out heat. I don't care for the Under Tank Heater. I was thinking of a clamp light. Hoping to adopt.

Hi and welcome! My kids are homeschooled too (ages 5 and 7). We started with a Leopard Gecko and seem to have, umm... lost our collective sanity ever since (well, it's really MY sanity that's gone; the kids are just enjoying the fruits of my madness).

What don't you like about the Under Tank Heater? I think some people do use a basking light instead, but I'm not clear on the pros and cons, except that I have read that they like belly heat for digestion. Though I believe one of our members here told me that isn't strictly necessary. Our Leopard Geckos have a Under Tank Heater and it has worked quite well.

Have you figured out any avenues for adopting in your area? I know some of the pet stores take in customers' unwanted pets and adopt them out again; in my area, both Petfinder.org and Craigslist.com are places I have seen Leopard Geckos available for adoption. It's possible your animal shelter would have one, but I think that's less common.

Welcome!

Hello and welcome to the site! I use Under Tank Heater's on 2 geckos and basking lights/slate tiles with 2. They all seem to get along fine.

Good Luck, I don't keep geckos, but I know a lot of people that do, it is a good choice, use the care sheets here, you will learn a lot.

I have a leo. I have a female, her name is odyssey. I too have a 20 gal. tank. I have repti carpet in as the substrate. She has a cave that she spends most her time in. I do have the undertank heater under the side with the cave. I do also have a black light for her at night. I don't leave a light on her during the day. She has a water dish. A buddah ornament and a sign that says reserved in there. She's is very healthy and satisfied with that. Pretty simple. They are not that hard to take care of. I feed her mealies and crickets dusted with calcium everyday!! Some people also say you should have a dish with pure calcuim in it. I don't but it maybe a good idea. I don't oppose or agree with that one yet. Well good luck with your decision and Happy Holidays.
