Hi! I'm fairly new to pet ownership that doesn't mean cats &/or dogs. My 9-year-old son captured 4 American toads and a Grey Tree Frog this spring. We have created a pretty cool habitat, but have only recently recognized that a couple of the toads are having trouble with their front legs. We're pretty sure that we've got a calcium deficiency problem & have begun correction of the problem. Unfortunately, I didn't recognize the leg tremors a month ago as a precurser. Our pet store has been supplying us with crickets, mealworms and wax worms but I don't think they knew anymore than I did. We've really enjoyed watching Mr. T, Fatty, Larry, Curly & Moe. I feel terrible that my ignorance has caused them any distress. Are there any other frog/toad owners out there that can help me learn? Thanks - iowajo

Welcome to HerpCenter!
I split your post off to give you your own intro thread.
Some of our frog keepers should be along shortly. Hopefully Perhaps they can help you.

Hi and welcome! I'm no expert, but are you dusting their insects with calcium powder? That might help.

Thanks, Amy. Just learned about that today. I bought calcium spray last week & it said to spray on the food, soooooo, I sprayed on the crix!! Yikes - all dead in about 10 minutes. I really should have been on this sight about 4 months ago, eh?

Welcome to HC!
you should get reptile calcium powder. You dust the crickets just before feeding them to the frogs, not before as it will just rub off.
I have no experience with calcium spray?? but I imagine if it is killing the crix it can't be a good thing...just my thoughts. I would say get the powder form

Welcome to Herpcenter. I would suggest using a dusting powder for the crickets, not the spray type. the spray type is designed for coating veggies for certain reptiles. The powder type is readily available at most pet store or online.

Welcome to Herp Center. With the dusting Calcium all you have to do is put some calcium in a zip loc bag and add crickets. Shake them like you would chick in shake and bake. Then feed them to your froggies.
