Adopted an Ig

Well when I first moved into my apartment my neighbor who works at the pet food store across the street told me that he couldn't keep his Ig because of his live in girlfriend's baby and offered it to me. Well 3 weeks later I'm finally moved in enough to move over my CWDs so I finished up the igs cage with what I had lying around (55gal trash can, a handful of dollar store vines, pvc pipe, newspaper, reptile furniture, etc.) and brought it over last night. He's about 20-22 in long and very active and fat. He's a tail whipper but not a biter and is acually very docile once I get a hold of him, having no problem just sitting on my hand once I've got him. The former owner charged with only the care and taming of Nova, now named GINO (Godzilla In Name Only, based off the nickname of that horrible American Godzilla). In a couple months I'll be building a 4'x4'x4' box for him because I plan on letting him roam, once he's more calm. Any ideas on Ig proofing a small room (tv, computer, bed)?

I would check out How to Keep your Free-Roaming Iguana Healthy and Safe. It will have plenty of tips/information. Dominick has free roamed Rex for many years.

I know that some have kept their igs free roaming without problems. And these are usually adult igs. IMO 22 inches is really too small to be free roaming unless the room has been completely stripped and dedicated to the iguana. You will have the problem of keeping the ig under the UVB light as well as keeping him warm. They just don't have enough body mass to retain heat for very long and being that small there are all sorts of places that he could get into where you cannot find him or retrieve him. My 4 ft+ female will still occassionaly get into hiding places where it is hard to find her. Luckly there is usually a tail tip sticking out to give away her new hiding place.

Lay down on the floor on your side and look around at all the places and things that the ig could get into trouble with. And then there is the pooping problem. Particularly problematic if the room is carpeted. They also seem to like to leave you presents on the bed.

One of the first things you are going to have trouble with is the electronics.

Iguanas are attracted to heat and your computor monitor is going to be very enticing due to the elevation and the warmth it puts out.
And then one day the Ig decides that its time to "go".
There went your monitor!

There is also the possibilty of there being times when keeping the iguana caged is necessary for both parties safety. A breeding season enraged male for instance. You have to be prepared for all circumstances.

Not yet as my video card is on the fritz and I'm using my work computer to visit here. But basically I've cut the front out and replaced it with clear vinyl. The bottom half of the vinyl is glued on and the top half is held on by self-adhesive velcro (as I had it laying around), my water dragons have zippers instead, which I sewed onto the vinyl. For furnitute I've built a large pvc gymnasium with multiple branches which I then glued on multiple silk vines from the dollar store. He has no problem getting up and down it. I have a 18" florensent socket mounted on the side going up and down so no matter where he hangs out he'll be able to get UVB. Right now I have a 100 watt bulb on the top, that easily keeps the highest location at 92 degrees and thanks to all the fake foliage I have a great gradiant that drops to 78 at the bottom, but when this cooling trend ends I'll have to keep an eye on the heat. I love handling him without gloves and checking out the slightly cut up skin on my hands afterward, his claws will need a good cutting someday.
