Help on taming!
Hi i've had my young iguana for a few months now and I am still trying to tame it.
When I try to get it from the cage it goes wild and runs for his life (thrashing everything in its way) but when its out and I have it in my hands for a bit he calms down and wiggles every now and then, but overall is pretty calm. So the steps I have been taking are holding him mostly everyday. Sometimes take him out on the leash(wich he hates). Put him down after 10-30 min only if hes calm. and I try to handfeed him a little bit everytime I take him out. any other things I should do.. and also what does it mean for him to go crazy when I try to get him but then calms down a bit when I hold him.. would this be called progress? any tips are welcome, thanks ![]() |

Re: Help on taming!
You have to see the world thru the iguana's eyes! This is a wild animal and YOU are a potential predator.
The enclosure is its terrritory. When you enter it you are invading its territory and are something to be avoided or fought off. What type of enclosure do you have? If it is such that you have to come in from the top in the ig's mind it is like you are swooping down to catch it. Birds of prey are one of the iguanas main predators. What sort of leash are you using and how? Many people make the mistake of thinking the leash will be used like for a dog and take the lizard for a walk. Not true. The leash is simply a safety feature to keep you from losing the lizard should it spook and bolt. Taming (actually socializing as they will never be "tame" as we think of it) can take a lot of time. Sometmes up to a year. And handling needs to be done daily. One thing you can do is to take the ig out and just sit with it in a small room like a bathroom. Having made sure that there are no holes or other places for it to get into and get lost. Just sit with the lizard and let it crawl around on you. Keeping the space small will also prevent you having to go chasing it thru the house which also makes you look like a predator.

Re: Help on taming!
You can hold it after a few months? Consider yourself a lucky one. Socializing is a life long commitment and you are already well on your way with the daily handling. It can take years before your iguana will seek you out rather than you seeking his attentions.

Re: Help on taming!
Also, be prepared for him never to fully tame so that he wants your attention. Some are better about it than others, but it's difficult with the best of them. Keep up the daily handling, and make sure he feels as safe and comfortable as possible. And be very, very patient.
It sounds like you've got a good one so far. Let us know how things go.

Re: Help on taming!
You've had some good advice. Just keep at it. You're new mantra is "I will be patient, I will be patient, I will be patient"...;-)
