This is a question I have had for a while now it may not make sense to anyone else but please any answers would be great.

If an Iguana is free roaming do you mean out of the cage all the time or most? If its most then how do you keep the tempature right? Wouldnt he/she be unhealthy if the house is too cold? LOL I know this sounds stupid but I just need to know lol curiosity killed the cat!

I believe that in most cases there is still an "iguana area" that he sleeps in, eats in, and basks in. THen when hes not doing one of the three hes exploring through out the house. Theres also heat gradients in your house, Im sure if the ig was cold on a hot day he would either go to his basking area or find a warm window.

My last iguana was free roaming and I made his cage so he was able to leave on his own and return to his food, water, and basking spot. My ig would explore the apartment then find my vcr and sleep on top of it because it was warm from the motor. But he would always return to his cage before the end of the night. Also for the free roaming iguana owners, if you happen to lose your ig check vcr's, tv's, computers, etc. because they are always drawn to heat and that's where they'll be most of the time.

for my igs they have a room to themselves well except for the computer the room itself stays in the low 80s during the day and mid 70s at night they have their basking area for major soak up the heat time cant say they do much romaing through the room though they do have windows to look out of and I play music for them during the day when im not here occasionaly ill come home to find them laying on the puter desk which I really dont care for but thyey dont knock anything over unless I have a bunch of stuff lying on it

My ig that free roams has a 'bed' and basking spot, as well as a feeding area were I keep his water bowl. The only things really off limits are the insides of cabinets and on top of my water dragon viv. He seems perfectly content to follow the sun across the floor or sit on the back of the sofa all day long =)

Most people that have free-raoming igs have places set-up in their homes for basking. Knowing that UVB does not penetrate through glass...when igs choose windowsills a UVB source is usually set up in that window...additionally an added heat source is also accomodated. Feeding stations are also set up for these free-roamers. Mine used to free-roam...until he decided that everything on the shelves must come down...everyday... .

I second Veronica and a few other posts above.

When Bob was allowed to roam he still had a cage that was too small for an adult ig (3'6" x 3'-6" x 6' corner cage) where a clear shower curtain covered the front. The cutrain maintained heat and humidity in the cage but Bob was able to walk right under it. Inside the cage he had a warm basking area with UV, and his poop tub. After a few weeks of moving him from where he fell asleep in the room back to his cage for the night he learned that it was his spot and, like a dog, would go back there when he wanted to be alone and sleep or warm up and bask. It also helps to have the highest area the ig can get to be in the cage, they naturally want to be above everything so make that their spot.

I allowed this until one day when Bob cleared off my desk, two shelves, two house plants, and broke a window while I was at school. As Dom coined the phraise, seasonal "wander lust" had set in. After 4 years of roaming he was caged and has stayed that way for the last 9 months. Now the tables have turned and I have claimed an area of the iguana's cage as my work area.

Having done both now (roam and cage) I am a fan of caging an iguana. It just elliminates so many potential hazards when the whole area they can get to is designed for an ig.
