Broken Nail--Bleeding Bad

Hello!

My 3-year old iguana, Rocky, is bleeding severely from his second toe on his right front leg. It appears that his nail is missing. He was in his outdoor cage yesterday and I think he may have got it caught in the mesh (based on what I've read in other threads). He is a free roamer in my house, and he is bleeding pretty bad. I have him in the tub, but the bleeding won't stop. Should I take him to the vet? Or, is there anything I can do in the meantime?

Thanks for any help or advice you may have!

Take a little dab of cornstarch and put on it. They will bleed what looks like profusely from a broken nail but it looks far worse than it is.

If there is water in the tub take him out of it. the water will prolong the bleeding

No problem! The way they bleed when they break a nail can really scare you.

Poor Rocky! Gandhi came to us with two missing toenails and they grew back eventually but one of them grew in sideways...

Weird about mr sideways toe. If he's a calm dude put some pressure on it...otherwise let it dry out. Make sure you wash it with something antibacterial? And after it drys out you can apply polysporn to let it heal quicker. I don't think there's any need to take him to a vet...they're just going to bandage him up and send him home.

Thanks everyone. He's doing fine. The cornstarch really worked, and he hasn't blead since.
