Tail Loss
I had company over yesterday and of course my ig, fluffy, is the highlight of the house tour. When I went to take her out of her cage to show her off she was being skiddish like she usually is. Well...i dont know exactly how it happened but while trying to grab her she squirmed out of my hand and before I knew it her detached tail was wriggling in my hand! She lost a good bit and i've been keeping it clean with betadine and neosporin. There is absolutely NO time for me to take her to the vet this week. I am booked with rehearsals and shows that I am in. What else can I do besides keep it clean and put neosporin on it? I got some pics of her and her tail. I feel about as guilty as guilty can get. It was all my faultIt's almost like she would have been better off staying at the fair than coming with me. I've only caused her burns, tail loss, and more stress.

You ARE taking proper care of the poor little guy....don't beat yourself up over this. Keep an eye out for infection and if the slightest thing does not look right take him to the vet.

Adam the most experienced keeper can have an ig drop its tail. Its something we all have to worry about. The fact that you had your hand on it and were trying to catch her just triggered what to her was a perfectly natural reaction. In the wild this reaction would have saved her life!
Just keep the cage clean, put a dab of neosporin on it daily and watch for signs of infection. At this stage of the game there is really nothing the vet can do that you can't.

Congratulations!
You're in the club Adam! LOL One of my favorite moments in ig care is when my son was holding one of our juvenile rescues and he came in the house, tears in his eyes, white as a ghost and extended his hand to show me the wiggling tail. I thought he was gonna faint! LMAO! It happens in the blink of an eye and there is no going back once it happens. Adam, you take good care of your iguana and there is no question that it has a better life now. Try not to feel so bad and just chalk it up to iguana experience. BTW, I keep the dropped tail in the freezer and ask every once in a while if the kids want it for dinner. LMAO!

ya'll are great, thanks for the kind words. If fluffy could speak i'm sure she'd chew me out but hopefully she'll get over it lol. I will keep everybody posted on her progress. The fact that she's young and has the best chance of the tail growing back to full length gives me comfort.
Thanks again, i knew there was a reason why I keep coming back to HC. ya'll are just so danged nice! ![]()

I agree with everyone else, Adam: Don't beat yourself up about this. Keep it clean, the enclosure clean, and be on the look out for infection.
As for her being better off if you'd left her at the fair... NO WAY... she'd probably already be in iggy heaven. You're doing a great job with her.

Just call it like we see it Buddy!
![]() Just take a look at that vibrant green color and have someone try to tell you that you aren't taking good care of Fluffy As I have said many times in the past: Tail loss is MUCH more traumatic to the keeper than it is to the iguana!
