Broken Tail

Hi Everyone,
I am so sad. I took Kane out tonight, trying to be a good iggy mom, and he so squirmy, I got him almost out and he freaked and I snapped (UGGHHH!) his tail off. I didn't mean to......he just twisted and jumped so quickly that.....it just happened. I held him, wasn't sure what to do. If looks could kill, I'd be a gonner. I called the emergency vet and was told to clean and wrap it. I'm not sure that I can wrap it. I'm not sure how I would do it. I'm afraid to put tape on his skin. I feel awful.
I've read about this but never thought it would happen to me. Any advice? Does it grow back? I've read conflicting answers.
thanks....
regretfully,
shelli..........

Sorry to hear that. You should actually TAKE him to the vet and let the vet take care of it, that is, if you have a good vet that you can trust (not all of them are good just because they have a certificate). Do it today!

You should do it now, really.

By the way, this vet told you to put TAPE on him? I am no expert but it sounds weird to me.

Anthony,
The urgent care told me to clean it, antibiotic and then badage with gauze and sports tape. He's not bleeding.......it's just really creepy, I feel terrible. He lost about 5 inches. I am going to clean it by placing a small dish w/ the iodine mixture and hope I can get his tail in there. (courtesy of info per this wonderful site!) I am going to take him in to the vet tomorrow.
talk to ya later

Well Huff dropped his tail. I soaked it in diluted Betadine (Povidine-iodine 10% solution) a few times a day to keep it clean. Put enough in the water to tint it a tea color. Then dried it. At night I put antibiotic cream on it. I was told not to bandage it by my vet. It would heal better without the bandage he said. The bandage would keep it clean but the air would make it heal faster. Said to keep the cage very extra clean instead and watch for any signs of infection.

Huff's seemed to grow to its normal lenth. His tail is 2x is body. But it depends I think on the age of the ig and how much is lost. The tail regrowth will be a solid color and have a different texture though.

It'll be fine as long as you keep the tail tip and the cage really clean. Odin has dropped his tail twice since I got him (shamed though I am to admit it) and now he has a normal size tail and even appears to be taking on some green colouring which is weird cause I thought it was supposed to be solid colour.

Kirsty, when you say he dropped his tail twice, does that mean he dropped one section, then later a higher up section? Or did it drop, grow back, then drop again?
Does this mean that they can grow a new tail regardless of how many times it drops off?

Unfortunately he had dropped his tail before I first got him. Then when I got him he got a fright and dropped another piece further up. I don't know if it will grow back an infinite number of times but so far its grown back and its not a bad length considering.

Huffy boy and his regenerated tail:

He dropped his tail right about one year ago. I think I previously understated how much he dropped. It was approximately 4" he dropped. He is 41" with 28" being tail and 8" of that regrowth. It is right after the last dark band. The whole regrowth is about the same shade but the scales are different. But I think it looks pretty decent for a dropped tail.

Hey Marie,
Thanks for the pic. of Huffs tail, I was always a little concerned about Iggies
tail where the regrowth was but after seeing Huff's now I feel better.
Iggies looks the same as his Kinda funny looking Is Huffs new growth area more sensitive to touch? Iggies is.
