Mites...what really works?

Ok, the two new iggies that I adopted last weekend, along with their enclosure, came with mites. Now I've been doing a lot of looking into on how to get rid of them. I've scrubbed their enclosure, trying to drown all the stinkers with soapy water and foam, etc. And the igs get nice long warm baths daily trying to drown more mites. And they've gotton their rub downs with mineral oil. And I still see stupid mites. So I found out that they can be treated with a combination of a spray called "Provent-A-Mite" used for the enclosure (inside and out) and using "Reptile Relief" to spray on the iggies themselves. Has anyone else used these before? And if so, were they effective?
And I see the little tiny black mites, but there are also these tiny little red mites as well. What are the red ones? Anyone know?

As usual, any advice is appreciated, thanks.

Hi!
So sorry to hear you've got mites. Here is my article on how I treat my snakes. Maybe some parts will be useful to you. Scroll down to the last article titled "You've got snake mites?"

Ewwww...so the little red ones that I've found on the igs are the ones that have just fed?

Thanks for the link, there's a lot of info there that I didn't find elsewhere, thanks. Looks like I have more work ahead of me than I thought. Ugh.

Good luck with the infestation. I've gotten them twice and both times I didn't have a problem getting rid of them, but I have heard some real horror stories!

We've had mite problems a couple of times in the past, and it was very stressful, but don't worry - you can get rid of them. At one point we had a mite infestation that extended to half our snakes, and it took a long time to successfully get rid of them, but we did, and ever since have been absolutely strict about long quarantine.

I've never experienced mites with any of the lizards, but you can get rid of them. We used a product called Frontline, used here for cat and dog fleas, diluted with pure alcohol. See your vet and have them prescribe something. You have some excellent links and tips here so I'm sure in no time you will be mite-free. Good luck and let us know how you get on.

I'd stray away from the frontline if you can though, it leaves a residue that can cause problems.....we've even had instances of it killing or making cats ill at work because the people but the stuff too low on the animals neck and they licked it off. I'm not saying it wont work, just be sure you know the risks involved.

Thanks for all the advice guys, I appreciate it.
All I could find so far was the Reptile Relief spray. Couldn't find the Provent-A-Mite stuff yet. I'll keep the Frontline idea in mind if the situation becomes desperate. I sprayed them with the Reptile Relief spay last night and that stuff actually works pretty darn good. What mites I saw, died instantly. So today, we did the remodel on their habitat and I ripped out there shelves and those icky ol' logs. Threw the logs outside, didn't want to reuse them. probably infested, yuk. I scrubed and soaked their small basking shelves and then treated them with the spray. I also scrubbed down the inside of their enclosure real good and sprayed it too. Then we installed their new long shelf (which I coated with sealer immediately), used their old shelves as steps and gave them a new log that I treated last summer and had put away in the garage.
So far, so good, haven't seen a mite yet since I did all this this morning. So we'll just have to wait and see and keep washing and treating.
Thanks again for all the advice!

The Reptile Relief can be used both on the animal and the enclosure. Its quite effective and one of the safest products for mites available.
