Honestly, I've found that tile - especially the cheap kind from hardware stores that you glue to the floor - work the best for me. Sure you have to wipe the waste up with a rag (Or, I've got some cleaning wipes that I use) and disinfect the floor every so often, but I tend to have to do that anyway, because my ig shreds newspaper and paper towels. With a replaceable tile, you can just pull it up and get new tile when you need to without much expense.

Substrate is a neat area, because everyone has a different opinion on what they want for their cage. Some want a more natural vivarium - so use things like soil. Others look for ease of care, so use tile or newspaper or something else that's safe for their animal and easy to clean.

In general, I recommend starting out with newspaper or paper towels, especially when the animal is recovering from sickness or injury. Once you've got everything set up and you've got a handle on what involved in the maintenance, then you can more accurately see if you want to change it to something more complicated.

By the way, you're doing great with this. No one expects you to have everything right over night. One thing at a time is the best way to go. Please do keep us updated on your poor sick baby.

I have never heard of this bulb. Can you describe it? Is it a screw in, a flourescent tube?
You may not have a UVB lamp at all!

Not with an iguana!
You cannot use particulate substrates with iguanas without incurring the very serious risk of them swallowing some of it and becoming impacted, resulting in either a trip to the vet for surgery to remove the blockage or, if you don't catch it quick enough, the death of the animal.
Sure it would be nicer looking with soil and live plants and all of that but with iguanas it just is not practical.

Yeah, here's how it looked in my mind. First paragraph - iguana specific (because I prefer paper towel for my other two). All the rest - general statement about all reptiles. But I'm a little insane, and it didn't come out that way.

Good thing you caught that.

Re: My Iguana Might Have Mbd and I Need Advice

Update on Spunky! He is doing much better! The swelling in his jaw has gone down and he is eating more. They don't really like their new diet yet, but they are eating it. I am still taking him to the vet this week to make sure we are on the right track, but again thank you all so much! I cannot express how happy I am!

That's great to know we were able to help your little guy. Keep up with the diet and lighting, and you will see great improvement.
