Bitting male ig

Hey everyone two days ago I got a new male ig. He was a great little guy until I was gone all day yeterday and when I got back he was stuck between the wall and stove. I had to pull him out by his tail alittle at a time.. Well once he was out he took off like a race car. By the time I got him and put him in his cage he was very upset with me. Later I went in to feed him and he turn on me and bit my left arm. I ended up at the hospital.
I just wanted to share this with everyone because it go's to show how afraid this igs can get. Now we have to work on the trust again.

My other ig is a lady who I just found out is very sick. At her yearly checkup we found alot going on with her. One is a Parasite called Cryptosporidium found mostly in snakes. They can't treat it. Then they found her phosphorous level is way up. It's like 9. something. This is a sign of kidney disease.

I wanted to share because it goes to show how important it is for yearly checkup. My little girl that I have worked so hard for 3 years is very slowly dieing because of kidney disease. I now have to decide how long to let her live. I don't want her suffering at all. I'm afriad that is what she is doing.
She hides most of the day. I would really like it if everyone would keep her in they prays. She is so sweet and loving that it is killing me to know I will be losing her to kidney disease.

Thank you all
Carol

Hello,
Sorry to hear of your troubles. Did the vet tell you the root of the kidney disease? How was the other ailment contracted? I understand that this is a pretty lousy time for you, but if you could shed some light on what caused the condition of your iguana, it could potentially save someone else from going through the same thing.

The vet says that she got the cryptosporidium parasite from another ig or shes just a carrier of the parasite. The only way to find out if an ig has it is by a fece test. It's very contiguous and can be pasted from animal to animal or to humans. You have to clean the cage with an ammonia based cleaning solution. My problem is before I found all this out I adopted another ig the male that bit me.
The kidney disease is caused by Metabolic Bone Disease. My baby girl when I rescued her was in a state of bad Metabolic Bone Disease and had a 50/50 change of living. That was three years ago. She has lived this long and now the calicum problem is the cause of her kidneys disease. I wish I could tell everyone more but you will need to go on line to find out about cryptosporidium parasite.

My male will come around in time. It's just that everything is so new for him. This is just his third night in his new home. It always takes time for igs to learn to trust.

Here is a place you can get more information on cryptosporidium
www.veterinarypartner.com

Rich I really wish I could tell you more but I'm just learning about this parasite myself.

Hello,
Crytosporidium is an infectious parasite that often is found in the digestive tract of the host. It can be passed along via feces, water contamination, etc. It apparently attaches itself to the cells within the host from whatI have gathered.
This parasite does not only inflict reptiles, but also mammals, including humans. The strand that humans have to deal with is C. parvum.

Quote:
The infective stage of Cryptosporidium is called an oocyst. Oocysts are excreted in the feces of infected animals and thus contaminate the environment; when other animals eat or drink (or in some cases inhale) food or water in the environment that is contaminated with oocysts, they also become infected. The oocyst consists of a very tough "shell" surrounding four individual parasites called sporozoites. After an animal (or human) swallows the oocyst, the shell breaks open and the sporozoites are released, this process is called excystation. The sporozoites enter the cells that line the lower small intestine and begin to develop. There are two cycles of asexual development which result in the production of structures called meronts that contain either 8 (first generation) or 4 (second generation) merozoites. After second generation merozoites invade new cells, "male" and "female" stages, called micro gametes and macro gametes respectively, begin to develop. When the micro gametes mature, they break out of the host cell and invade a cell containing a macro gamete; fertilization then occurs and the fertilized macro gametes develop into oocysts. After the oocysts mature, they also break out of the host cells. Two kinds of oocysts are produced: thin-walled oocysts that excyst while still in the host to start another cycle of infection and thick-walled oocysts that pass out in the feces and can infect other animals. As the different stages of the parasite break out of the host cells, the cells are killed and the immune system is stimulated. Destruction of intestinal cells and the massive movement of immune cells into this site cause the clinical symptoms observed during a C. parvum infection. Infection is usually limited to the intestinal tract, but in immunocompromised humans or animals, other areas may also be affected. For example, in AIDS patients, the parasite may colonize the lungs, liver, pancreas, bile ducts and gall bladder.
I don't have the time now to site and actually write up information on this parasite, but I will do so in the future. I have some info available, as well as some info I have found on the net.

As a precautionary measure, has your new iguana had a fecal and blood work done?

Not yet. My baby girl has an appointment in a week. I will get a fecal from my male and take it in with me. Then on the first of the month he will go in for a complete checkup. That's the most important thing I have to do because we have to make sure he is a healty boy. Right now we have a trust thing going on. He wants to bite and I don't want him to. The tail really hurts you know. Ha Ha Ouch lol

Hey Carol... have you thought about getting a second opinion? I've got a GREAT vet down in Lodi. It may be worth a trip down there to double-check if there's another solution.

I'm SO sorry to hear about the troubles you're having!

This is to let everyone know how my baby girl ig is doing. I'm afraid not good. I will be having her put down because I don't want her to suffer anymore. I can't do anything to help her with kidney problems and it will only get worse for her. She is hurting so bad that she trys to bite me everytime I reach in her cage. That is something she has never done before. You can see it in her eyes how much she is hurting. I wanted to thank everyone for your kind words and prays.

On the other hand my big boy is doing better. He is eating out of my hand and sleeping with my grandson. He's a free romer so I have to take him out every day in the sun for at least 1 hour. I do this twice a day. He will be going to the vets on the 1st of the month to get a checkup to make sure he is healthly. Will keep everyone up to date on him.

Here's some more on it:
Anapsid - Cryptosporidium

This is a real nasty. I would definitely seek a second opinion.

I'm sorry for your girl. I know how difficult it is. She will remember your kindness... .
