Getting agressive

Hi,
My 4 years old male iguana is starting to have a very strange behavior. He seems to be aggressive, has he knocks his head up and down (only to me), my boyfriend and a friend petted him and he loved it. When I put him back to his cage he has the same aggressive behavior but when he's out he's always over me (on my shoulder, head, arm...) if I put him on the floor he jumps again to my arm. What can it be? I don't thing he is protecting his territory or that he's in season.

Best regards,
Catarina

he may be going into season, mine is getting a little more aggressive too. The other thing is that some are very aggressive toward people going into their living space. Just be carefull, they can give a nasty bite.

Sounds like he could possibly be going into season...just be careful of those razor sharp teeth....and it is normal for them to be territorial within their cage...best wishes...

Sounds like breeding season to me too. One other related possibility is he's reacting to YOUR hormones. Where you are in your cycle can impact how your male will relate to you.

Watch your face and hands... ig teeth can do serious damage.

Hi,
Thank you all, but I really don't think his in season, I haven't seen that white thing they normally leave all over the place, the last time he was in season it was in october/november and he stop eating, it's not the case now. Actually he is eating very well. I think that if he was defending the territory he would jump to my arms when I take him out or when I'm on the floor with him. Can a male iguana have two breading season in a year?

Best regards,
Catarina

Re: Getting agressive

I'm new. But, I can contribute! My iguana became aggressive recently, it was very odd for him to be aggressive. As it turned out, he had parasites. Once he got de-wormed, he was himself again.

I have also read that when a female is on her cycle, she puts off a different kind of pheromone. This is sometimes thought to cause an aggressive attack by a male iguana on her female owner. It's not 100% proven I don't think. But it does make sense in a way.

Re: Getting agressive

have had this for a month now and I am getting very fed up with it! Every time I open the housing to feed him he cocks his head and hunches ready to attack. I dont think it helps that I made him a nice tall housing to allow him to climb - it also allows him to sit at the top in a dominant position and kid himself he is bigger than me, and makes it difficult to pre-empt his lunges. I read Melissa Kaplans site, which suggested that you must not allow the ig to suceed in 'dominating' you, but all I seem to have succeeded in doing is entering a permanent competion for who can be the meanest creature. It makes entering tha cage to clean it a little too exciting. I am getting very nostalgic for my beautiful, gentle natured iguana to return.

Re: Getting agressive

lol, just read "a quiet, passive iguana is an unhealthy iguana" in that case mine is in the peak of health!!!!! I also quite like the concept of "iguana PMS". Maybe I just have to wait for the right time of the month so that me and my ig can out-mean each other. ;-D

Most of us have been through times like that... hang in there, and if all else fails, lower the basking shelf!!
