Getting parasites later in life?

Hey. How many of you guys have had an iguana baby that was checked and free of parasites, or has been dewormed, but later on several years later, they got parasites within captivity?

I KNOW that it is possible, that is not what I am asking.

I am asking if it has actually happened to anyone here.

Yeah, I've had it happen with iguanas, my Bearded Dragon and my skinks. The vet said that in the iguana is could have been from improperly washed foods and the others could have gotten it from live prey. I check my guys about every six months now because it doesnt cost me anythin to do it.

Hello,

I have had Leopard Geckos become ill and it is often from the food they eat that I have ordered or bought at the LPS.

Mites, which are also a parasite, are another critter that can easily be brought into the home. If you want to find some wild mites, look for some concrete structures bordered by grass. You will often see the little things crawling around on the concrete.

Internal parasites can be brought in with the greens and veggies you buy. Thats why most food items such as fresh veggies suggest washing them thoroughly before preparing them.

There are also some gut organisms that are always there. It is when there is an inbalance in the good/bad ones that they become a problem. Stress and illness can cause an inbalance and treatment may be needed. Regular probiotics help crowd out bad organisms and keep the balance. I think that is what happened to Baby before our move. She was stressed from the syringe feeding. She needed to be treated. But Dragon did not need to be treated and they eat all the same food and are housed together.
