Iguana growth slow down.
Hi.
First things first. I know that iguanas' growth rate slows down as they age and this is normal. However, my iguana is less than a year old, and has been in my care for a little over 4 months only. Before this, I had measured my iguana once a week or so, to find each time that it has grown in snout to tail length by about 1 to 1.5 inches. I hadn't measured it for a few weeks, as I normally do only when its asleep, and recently it has slept in a curled up position. So its been like 3 weeks or so. But this time around it only grew about 1.75 inches snout to tail length. I know this isn't much to concern myself about, but just making sure its not indication that his nutrition or condition has worsened. He used to get rep-cal everyday in his food. But the past few weeks have only been rep-cal 3 - 4 days a week because I noticed that when rep-cal is added that he eats much less food volume wise, so I gave this a try. Also, I know its crap when they say they grow to fit their enclosure, but the fact is that he is getting close to the length of his enclosure of 4.2 feet, certainly closer than when it was 18 inches long, and I don't know if this somehow affects its growth SPEED. |

No Anthony your enclosure has nothing to do with the growth rate. Iguanas have periods of rapid growth and periods where their growth is not so fast. As long as everything else( eating, pooping, shedding, etc) is going on don't worry

Well, then I guess its ok.
Everything is normal except I give less rep-cal now. She has this thing where she would be pooping normally and then all of a sudden hold it for 3 days and then let a rip. She's also been particularly cranky lately, whippy, clawy etc. I don't think she's old enough to be in season yet, although her snout to vent length is 11 inches. This morning though, she greeted me with a morning head bob (well, at least it COULD have been a greeting I dunno.) |
