Humidity

I was wondering what are the dangers to iguanas if the humidity is too low? I've tried cool water misters which lower the humidity, misting several times a day from a garden sprayer but still can't get it above 30%. I've got a Under Tank Heater with a small water bowl underneath as well.

I have a mister that is electronic that has a tank of water. It mists 24/7 and I just add water when the tank is empty or almost empty.

By the way, is Odin doing ok?

That sounds like something similar to what I have, mine sprays for 45 minutes every hour and discharges a cool spray into the tank

Not really as great as I would like i'm posting like mad at the moment to try to get his humidity sorted and I really need him to eat more (loads more) he only eats a teaspoon a day and has only gained 6 grams in 3 months.

Oh my... a teaspoon isn't much at all. Has he been taken to the vet?

Not yet. He was only there in November and my vet says there was nothing wrong but i'm begining to doubt that fact. I know by your posting the other day he should really be eating about 1/2 cup of salad at least

I don't understand how you can be having the humidity problems that you have had with an enclosed tank. You described before that your mister leaves the tank with standing water. Something is wrong here and I suspect that it may be your humidity gauge. What kind are you using?

Ok sorry let me understand this correctly. A teaspoon as in basically just one bite? That's not good at all. I'm genuinely concerned. You should really take him to the vet, a good one of course. Take him to another one if the old one says no problem, just to get a second opinion.

Ok I am going to post this here, knowing I will not get many people who agree or like me for saying this.
My iguana doesn't like his food grated or chopped up really small at all. It prefers medium pieces. I'm NOT saying this is for everybody! It depends on your ig's preference. OF COURSE you must chop hard things like squash, peppers, veggie stalks etc as small as possible, or else they can choke! But for my iguana, I give it a few whole SOFT leaves a day too, with the stalks removed. He much loves these. I take the whole leaf with stalks removed and put soaked and soft rep-cal pellets in the underside, then fold it over and squash the rep-cal so it is a paste, leaving it folded like a sandwich. I put it so that the leaf's edge is sticking out the side of the bowl. Once it bites the leaf, he will then proceed to eat all of it. On treat days I even put some whole wheat soaked bread on the edge of the leaf, and once it bites onto it, it will proceed to swallow anything that is attached to what is in its mouth already.

You MAY want to give this a try. But YOU MUST CHECK WITH YOUR VET FIRST! If he's eating so little because something is blocked, or some other reason, you will NOT want to do this. So MAKE SURE you CHECK WITH A VET before you try this.

For those of you who don't think this is a viable option please feel free to flame me. But I am genuinely concerned about Odin's well being and this is something I observed that may possibly help an iguana that is not eating enough. Hence my post.

A teaspoon basically consists of 5-6 vary small squares of spring green, and a couple of peices of mango of sugar snap pea. I really isn't much. I've had him back and forth to the vet since I got him but nothing works and my vet ( who I might add is the professor for the vet school in glasgow) didn't seem to think anything was wrong. But it seeming more and more that he may be wrong.

Kirsty the little dial guages that work by way of a coiled spring inside are known to be very inaccurate. I had one of the thermometers that I checked with a digital and the darn thing was off by 10 degrees! Also if it has ever gotten wet it generally corrodes and won't work at all. Does the needle even move when the sprayer is on?

Anthony you should know by now that there is no flaming allowed here! We just won't have it! Whatever works for an individual animal is what is used! As long as it works for you and isn't something that will be harmful to the animal go for it.
