Time without UV?
Well I am about to ask nearly the same question for a third time but maybe I should phrase it differently to save asking it a fourth time later on.
When an adult ig (10 years) lives in the light of a MegaRay EB normally how long can he go safely without UV?
10 days, 14 days, 21 days?
Going without UV when, say, you go on a trip to a different house in a different state, and no I never bother with health certificates when I move with my ig about half a dozen times a year.
For the rest of HC here is the background on my queston. Over the Christmas break I will be going to my dad's place in Metro Detroit and taking my 10 year old ig along with me, I can easily bring his cage and lighting fixtures with me in my car but if I can at all avoid it I don't take the actual lamps with me. Why risk the break

Hello,
Actual time frames would be hard to say "absolutely". I would say that your iguana would easily be fine for 14 days without the megarays however.

Well you got me reading and in particular http://www.uvguide.co.uk/index.htm. I couldn't find the answer set in stone there but I did read that calcediol, 25-hydroxy-vitamin D3 does have a half-life in humans of 14 days. Which I know that iguanas are not humans but it was mentioned in the study. This makes me believe 2 weeks would be a good educated estimate. But I would be interested in finding more information on a more definitive answer myself.
As for health certificates that is a technicality that most do not even know about and that there is not any enforcement that I know of when it comes to pets. The only reason I got one was because I was moving clear across the country and I was having my iguanas checked out anyway before the move. So I figured why not get the certificate.

Marie: I think you are taking half-life in the wrong way. The half-life of a material indicates how long it takes for a qualtiy to reduce to half its current level. In this case after 14 days the leve drops to 50%, after 28 days of no input it is 25% of the day 0 level, after 42 days it is at 12.5%.
Rich is right, there is no definent answer to this. Both the health and age of the lizard play into this big time. I am nearly sure the number of days for Bob would be larger than the number for a yearling (activly growing) or an ig recovering from Metabolic Bone Disease.
I don't think I will be gone for any longer than I was over Thanksgivinig. I did not have the MegaRay for that time. He has now been under the MegaRay for a month again.

Well yes I do know what half-half life is but that was for a human and I was trying to be conservative. I did say I couldn't find a definitive answer also. Sorry to give an opinion. But when there is no definite answer that is what there is left to give to a question asked.
Oh I forgot to say, have a safe trip Mark. And Merry Christmas. Enjoy.

Opinions are what I am looking for. I guess I misread your post when you spotted that 2 week time. From some reason I was thinking that was two halflife time intervals, talk about lack of short term memory on my part. That whole day to week conversion did not set in as I read the post.
Thanks for the safe trip thougths. I still have three days of class before I leave though. Are you doing anything now that you have moved from the southwest people's republic nearly across the country?

Actually I already did my traveling. I took a 2 1/2week trip. I rented a car. I first went to spend Thanksgiving with my sister in KS since I didn't make it to her husbands funeral then went to my Dad's in MS. Then I went to SC to see my Dad's x-girlfriend. Then went up to New Bern and Durham, NC to meet some people in person. Then went to my nieces in TN and dropped off some stuff my sister sent by me. I then went back to MS since when I went there the first time my Dad had been in the hospital due to a fall. Then came back to Ohio. I missed all the major weather through out my trip luckily. So I'm now all traveled out and my wanderlust is satisfied for the time being. I got to say the weekend I spent in NC was the best part--no family drama to get drawn into there.
And Mark, California is not that bad but San Diego was just getting way too expensive. And I was ready for a major change.
Well again stay safe.

OH -> KS -> MS -> SC -> NC -> TN -> MS -> OH
Whoa there's one long circle. I don't envy that drive. All I will be doing is from southwestern Indiana to Detroit. I managed to get out of backtracking to my mom's place in St Louis.
