Gah! I'm Mad at a Shelter!
So, I was going through petfinder's reptiles and I found a baby iguana, there are many things I found wrong about the care sheet.
1. the vet put it on meal worms for the diet because she's small 2. they said when trimming the nails they will bleed and it can be stopped by pushing the bleeding nail into a bar of soap or BURNING IT with a solder gun!! 3. "I suggest using a heat rock- aka a sizzling stone" 4. "I like to supplement natural sunlight with ordinary incandescent bulbs housed in standard aluminum clip-on concave shields" 5. "Animal protein is usually supplied to iguanas at dog and cat chow but also as crickets and even mice. In the wild, iguanas do not eat animal protein. They should not receive it in captivity." (does this make sense? ) 6. limit the amount of logs and rocks and decor in your cage, it makes it harder to clean I limit it to one log with the bark removed GAHHHHH i'm emailing them. what horrible information!! |

Yikes, I know next to nothing about IG's but even I can see the problems there
You are correct, #5 makes no sense..... Before I read your comment in () at the end I thought maybe you had a typo..... disturbing care sheet to say the least.![]()

This thing is a conglomeration of misunderstood and poorly presented information.

However the soldering gun bit is ridiculous! There is a tool for trimming the claws that consists of a thin wire that gets very hot that melts the tips of the nails. I have seen it used and its pretty effective. However if the ig struggles and gets skin against it (either the ig's or your's!) it's pretty dangerous. Quote:

I think he was saying you could use an ordinary bulb INSTEAD of sunlight!

re: Gah! I'm Mad at a Shelter!
They definitely need to get a better caresheet. At least one that makes things a little clearer! I can't imagine adopting an iguana and being given that sort of information. And then I'd think that was *right* and argue with people about it. Bad all the way around.

re: Gah! I'm Mad at a Shelter!
Supplementing would imply using the bulb in addition to natural sunlight. But I agree it is not very clear and could be easily misunderstood.

Re: Gah! I'm Mad at a Shelter!
I will have to agree with Merlin on this one. Sometimes my cages are elaborately decorated, other times they are not. I have a few that are known poop smearers, so they get the basic minimum as far as logs and such. I have some very large cages and if you ever had to drag a ton of heavy driftwood outside it can be exhausting, lol. By the time you get outside to pressure wash it, you are laying on the grass begging for mercy, and saying some not so nice things at the iguana who is giving you the amused look through the window, lol.
I do have some elaborately decorated cages though, and those are the ones that have been here for a while and are tub trained.

Re: Gah! I'm Mad at a Shelter!
As for the cage, I agree shelters can only do the simple, but this is for an at home cage for people buying the iguanas. One log just isn't enough for them to choose where to be in my opinion.
As I was reading their webpage to get the email address. I am not totally sure it is a rescue at all, it sounds like a petstore, but they say they only sell animals they get from shelters, but they only have babies. |

Re: Gah! I'm Mad at a Shelter!
Hmmm...petfinder only allow shelters and rescue orgs and you either need to be a 501(c)3 or a vet needs to give a recommendation (how I got mine). I would suggest offering new material for them to read and offering links to better their own caresheets. Do it in a way that's not accusing or flaming. Something like "I was noticing your info on iguana care was a little outdated. I hope you don't mind me offering you some links to better information."
Even though it's hard sometimes to be nice - you really do get more accomplished by doing so.
