Benadryl and Maalox?
I have heard that there is a remedy for dealing with infections in the mouth using a 50/50 mix of Benadryl and Maalox. I heard that will take care of an infection in there. I am curious if anyone knows if this is safe for use with an Iguana. If anyone else has any of these kind of at home remedies for different things, I would love to hear those as well.

Re: Benadryl and Maalox?
No! Don't dose a reptile with human drugs without first consulting an expert reptile vet.
I'm also not sure that either of those would fight an infection.
If you suspect he has an infection please take him to a vet so he can get on the proper antibiotics.

Re: Benadryl and Maalox?
In reality, the best thing in this situation is to take the animal to a vet, though I understand the "Home remedy" aspect, and have even done a bit myself in some situations, any infection in the mouth, can be rather serious.
I do belive i've heard of minute quantities of Benadryl (Diphenhydramine hydrochloride) being used in VERY mild cases, but Maalox is an antacid containing Aluminium hydroxide and Magnesium hydroxide, I don't really see what this would do for a mouth infection, unless the Aluminium hydroxide acts as a Adjuvant to something in the Benadryl. One of Benadryls side effects is dry mouth, perhaps this is where the "remedy" comes from, unless its something to do with the antihistamines? though I can't really figure out what that would effect with a mouth infection, unless it's allergy related?
I honestly would be very wary of using this on any animal though, and I'd say the best remedy for a mouth infection, would be taking it to a vet, where they can proscribe you a general "blanket" antibiotic, and take a culture to be tested, enabling them to find out just what type of infection it is, and just what antibiotic is needed.

Re: Benadryl and Maalox?
I heard that this is a concoction used to treat infections in the mouths of cats. The Maalox is used as a cooling agent to help with the pain caused by the infection. I just thought I would throw this out there and see if it would work in reptiles as well.

Re: Benadryl and Maalox?
Mammals and reptiles vary so much that what's good for the cat isn't going to work the same for a reptile. Be careful not to draw conclusions from mammalian remedies.

Re: Benadryl and Maalox?
I by no means thought that this would work in a reptile, and regardless of what everyone on here said, I wouldn't trust it enough to try it. I just thought I would throw it out there and see what people had to say on it. I think that there are enough medications out there designed for use with reptiles and what I consider a decent cost that it just makes sense to use those and not home remedies. I just like hearing what people have tried in the past and hear what has worked and what has not.

Re: Benadryl and Maalox?
I didn't know if it would work or not, that is why I was throwing it out there. I myself would not use this as I just as a general rule don't use medications made for one species (i.e. humans) on a species that medication was not intended for. I was just debating it earlier today with someone and thought that someone on here may have the answer.

Re: Benadryl and Maalox?
Any question is relevant.
There are a lot of nonsense things that float around and people hearing about them SHOULD toss it out for debate.
It might keep someone else from believing it and making a serious mistake.

Re: Benadryl and Maalox?
I agree 100% with that Merlin. We hear a lot of horror stories with running the rescue and some of them down right scare me when I think that people are actually employing these kind of practices in their husbandry.

Re: Benadryl and Maalox?
I am glad you asked, however I am going to have to agree with everyone else. Not a good idea! In rescue I have heard some strange things, lol. However, I have never heard of that one. Are you talking about mouth rot, as far as the infection in the mouth goes?
Mouth rot is usually a secondary infection, so basically if you have an animal that has mouth rot, you need to treat the initial infection to stop the mouth rot. Mouth rot can also lead to serious facial deformities if left untreated. My Wing and Prayer have permanent deformities of their face because of mouthrot that was left untreated. I had to treat them with injectable antibiotics for quite some time to stop the progress of it.
I would seriously recommend a vet if this is the same animal you posted about with the skin issues.
