Moving!

At the end of may i'm moving to a different apartment. It's just a few blocks from where I am now but i'll be living with my boyfriend and 3 other guys (EEEEK) but guess what!!!! I'll have a YARD! a real YARD the house we are looking at has a deck (really small but there!) and a yard a building (they have it as a jumbo dog house right now) and a garage!! (yep 1 stall 5 people... we will use it as storage I guess)

If we get that house I will make a cage for my iguana to be out side on nice days in the summer he will love it!! i can make it really really big if I use the building too he can go in and out and stuff it would be great.

And a bonus.. my dad is a metal worker he can weld me a really sturdy cage for cheap. i will make it dog proof and have a lock on the door to make it people proof as well.

i'm so excited...

Is it ok to have grass in his cage? or should I build a floor that's above the grass? i will also be able to put plants in his cage

Re: Moving!

I would put a floor in. Any plants you put in will have to be safe for consumption,,,and he'll probably trash them anyway. Best of luck with the move !!!!

Re: Moving!

I'd be nervous about parasites or pesticides from the grass and or soil. I would say a solid floor off of the ground.

Re: Moving!

I would also put a floor in there. Otherwise it will be impossible to clean and you will eventually have a mess of feces on the ground!
And you also don't want to have to worry about the iguana digging its way out.
Or something else digging its way in to get to the ig!

Re: Moving!

i was thinking I would have a mesh floor and hose it down to get the feces way ... i hadn't thought about pesticides much.. i doubt there would be many but I wouldn't risk it at all. the reason I didn't want a solid floor is because I want to put a pool in there for him... you know the child wading pools? and then I can go in and dump it and it would go in the yard and I could pick it up and take it out to clean it out.

Re: Moving!

Definitely solid. You can still use the pool, just put it on top, not dug in.

Re: Moving!

The grass is always greener with iguana poop! It's like grass-steroids! Wherever Rex pooped in the yard in NJ the grass grew 5 times as fast of the rest. LOL!

One more consideration, socialization. Be very diligent to interact with your iguana just as much, and in the same way, as you do now. Some iguanas who get an awesome outside enclosure decide they no longer like humans and get aggressive and territorial about their outside cages. Then, before you know it, no one handles the mean iguana anymore and they end up alone in the outside cage.

So, make sure you are diligent about socialization outside too!

Good luck and green thoughts!

Re: Moving!

Well I live in iowa so there aren't going to be very long that he can be out side, i will mess with him just as much if not more because I like being out side too and if I can fit in his cage he can come down and sit with me when I give him treats and I think I won't chance him being out all night he will come in.
