Nail Clipping

My iguana does really well with clipping his nails but I don't ever get them not sharp enough to not to cut me. it just seems I get them from razors down to scratchers is there a way that I can get them duller? I think I am cutting them short enough... but not too short... he hates the nail file so thats out...

i was wondering if any one has tried those cat nail covers? the waxy plastic ones? i'm kinda tired of bleeding every day... i know some scratches happen and I don't mind that but...

I Look suicidal

Re: Nail Clipping

I clip Critter's nails but his nails still scratch too. So I made some "arm protectors". They are just denim cuffs that cover my forearms, but my hands are free. I made them with velcro to fasten them closed, but really they just slip over my arms. The denim is quite heavy so his nails don't go through. I've been using them for about 3 weeks now and almost all my scratches have healed up and no new ones.(We have a family wedding coming up in the summer and I don't want to look like I've been in a war zone!)

I can post a picture if you'd like!

Re: Nail Clipping

Re: Nail Clipping

Scratches are just something keepers of iguanas have to deal with. Even freshly clipped nails are still sharp on the edges and if your clippers are dull the nail is torn more than cut and makes things worse.
What I use on my adult female is a dremel rotary tool with a sanding barrel. Since it is grinding the nail as opposed to cutting it you end up with a much smoother trim.

Wouldn't a rotary tool like a dremel bother him like a nail file?

Re: Nail Clipping

depends really. It could, but with a dremel you could use a finer grit grinder then a nail file would be. it would be a smoother filing then rubbing a file back and forth.

Re: Nail Clipping

The speed the dremel turns is so fast that it doesn't take long to reduce the nail.
Not quite the same as holding a toe and filing back and forth, back and forth.
Zok barely notices it.

Re: Nail Clipping

I have used dremel tools before, but mine is the same way, hates the whole filing thing and the dremel freaks him out. If you cut the nail at an angle slightly in the opposite direction of the natural curve, the iguana will wear it down to smooth, but there really is no good way to do it, after a week it is still a little dagger.

The plastic nail covers just scream eat me, and they are not designed for iguanas or birds, they are generally not the right shape and pop off the day you put them on.

I would just wear a flannel over shirt when handling, thats what I do, otherwise my wrist and forearm look like a failed suicide attempt. I have heard that if you continually cut the nail, as soon as it starts to sharpen, the quick will recede and you can cut the nail slightly shorter so that there is less length to it so idealy less to cut you with.
