Very Sick Green Iggy....help

He is about 2-4 months old, El Salvadorian green iggy. His back is sunk in from just behind his ribs all the way down to the base of his tail, and his tail is all kinked up like a big "S" curve. His back looks broke but he is still up climbing and walking around.

Do you have a picture? Is he yours and how did he get in this condition? Is he not eating? If hes yours, what is his enclosure like? LIghts? UVB? etc.

Re: Very Sick Green Iggy....help

sounds like a really bad diet combined with metabolic bone disease. Tell us about his set up and what his diet is. Enclosure size, substrate, humidity and temps.

Re: Very Sick Green Iggy....help

A friend just picked him up from a pet shop. Been on a diet of juvie food and romaine. Got the right lighting and everything. Looks like he is dehydrated or straving.

Sounds like both. Here is the caresheet, your friend needs to read it and also get the ig to a vet.

yes, but what IS the lighting. Not all lights are created equal. His diet needs serious fixing. Check out the care sheet, it lists everything he needs.

Re: Very Sick Green Iggy....help

He is under a 100watt uvb bulb during the day and a 75watt uvb moonlight at night plus a heating rock.

What are the temps? The more info you provide about his set up the more we will be able to help. I would suggest adding a UVB bulb for during the day. The best to purchase is from The Mega ray from Welcome To ReptileUV - Mega-RayŽ UVB lamps for reptile lighting worldwide

Re: Very Sick Green Iggy....help

be sure the UVB is 10.0

If its lower than that, its not enough UVB. It also needs to shine directly on him, no more than 10 inches above the basking area and not through screen. Otherwise its not getting to him.

Look into the diet. Thats a big problem. Also look into calcium supplements and a vet visit could rule out or show parasites which are very easliy treated.

And I have NEVER heard of a UVB moon bulb.

And throw that heat rock away. Think of it as a slow cooker. They cause burns.

Re: Very Sick Green Iggy....help

Well the temp stays in between 75-85 degrees the uvb bulb is a 10.0 and as far as the calcium he is getting a dose of repetative vitamin supplement with every feeding now. The uvb moon bulb was bought at the pet shop where he got the iggy. I have one for my 2 iggys and it seems to work. According to the box it puts out the much needed uvb rays but it has almost a blacklight glow to it. It is supposed to produce fake moonlight rays to regulate breeding cycles.
