Sunburn
Can Igs get sunburn if they are not used to being outside?
This afternoon, It was warm and sunny outside so I took mine outside tanks and all, for about fifteen minutes. I took everything out and laid the tanks at an angle so the sun would shine through the screen and not the glass. I left one end in shadow in case they get too hot. I was attempting to get them some natural uvb.

Re: Sunburn
No they cannot sunburn but they can easily overheat.
I would advise not putting anything outside in a glass tank even if an area of it was shaded.

Re: Sunburn
Ok, Well, When I said it was warm, it was about 63 degrees and a little breezy. I was actually worried the would get sun burnt and cold at the same time. But they seemed to enjoy it. Especially the male. He had his head perked up and wasn't trying to run away from me as he usually does.

Re: Sunburn
Unfortunately glass filters out the UVB anyway.
When it's warm outside, I have a very large dog crate that is open with large bars. I'll put Don Iguan in that and let him get sunshine. A little like this one. The one he stays outside in is HUGE and easy for him to move about in. He's not a big fan, he's really never been outside much in his life, poor thing, but it's good for him. ![]() I have a smaller one for traveling purposes - like going to the vet - or to keep him in when he's feeling mean and I need to clean the cage. ![]() I'm sure you could find a wire cage that would be small enough or big enough for yours. (I don't know the sizes, sorry.) A bird cage would work for small igs.

Re: Sunburn
Well, come summer time, They will be outdoors 24/7. That will be late april/early May. I know that's not "Officially" summer, But I'll keep a heat lamp just in case of some mildly cold nights.
I will be moving most of my lizards outside for the summer unless we have a repeat of last years drought. Otherwise, It is very humid down here normally.

Re: Sunburn
That sounds like it will be very nice for them.
Wish I could do that here. It often gets warm enough, at least for a month or two, but not often humid enough.Plus, in this neighborhood, I wouldn't put it past someone to come right up into my yard and steal him. The audacity of some of the people around here is completely amazing. Property boundries are apparently non-existant. They will come right up onto my deck at night to smoke and drink, then leave their crap on there or in my yard. One even scratched his name on the wood railing. I've had to call the police more than once.

Re: Sunburn
I put Gil out in a similar crate that Typhanie linked to. He loves it! I'm toying with building him an outdoor enclosure for summertime, but it gets SO hot here (100+ some days) that I'll need to add a misting system to cool him off.
Og_, I think an outdoor enclosure is a great idea... it will certainly be good for their health! To change the subject, I've gotta say that your new avatar is WAAAAAYYY creepy! ![]()

Re: Sunburn
I built a large enclosure with a "coated" chicken wire mesh to use during our brief warm season and my ig loves it. I wish we had a longer season for it to enjoy the out doors more up here. No glass involved. So I guess my input based on my experience is if you are blessed with a warm climate give them natural sunlight with an open air enclosure.

Re: Sunburn
I'm in college and live in an apartment in the college part of town so I would never leave my iguana outside even on the few days that its nice out, but I do have a leash for him and take him out for walks and take him to the park he loves going, he's also very good about only eating stuff in his bowl so I don't have to worry too much about him eating things.
