Heart Attack Number 2 Today

My first was over a work related incident which I wrote about in my blog. After that scare, I thought the worst of the day was over.

Nope.

It took me an unusually long time to get home tonight. But I ended up stopping at the grocery store and picking up a banana as a treat for Don Iguan, who's been fussy with his food again lately. As per normal, he pounced on his favorite treat with gusto, then to my complete horror, began choking like I've never seen him choke before.

Every once in awhile I'll see him seem to struggle getting some food down his throat, but it hasn't happened in a few weeks. This was not like that. He was sitting straight up, mouth open, gasping for air.

I lost it, I'm ashamed to say. Panicked. I swear my heart stopped dead.

The only think I could think to do was rub his throat, trying to get the piece of banana down. I was about to kiss my fingers goodbye and just scoop it out when he upchucked it in two chunks. He still looked bad, though, and I was totally freaked out, so I grabbed him and tossed him in the tub for an impromptu bath.

He was totally unimpressed. Poor thing. The sun had already gone down and he was probably exhausted after all that. But I insisted he stay in for 15 minutes, while I cleaned out his cage again to calm my nerves. By the time I was calmed down, he was active again, and ornery. Now he's sitting in his cage, practically glowing, having turned the brightest green I've ever seen him, watching me check up on him every two minutes.

That makes me wonder. Could it actually be amusing him to see me completely flip out?

I'm still upset though. I've never seen him choke like that before, especially not on the normal little pieces I've given him a dozen times. I'm guessing it's vet time, again, especially if he doesn't eat normally tomorrow. I'm just afraid I'm going to get the "There's nothing wrong with him" response again. :P

My Grizzly has done that to me before,, I took a firm grip on his dewlap and had to retrieve the banana, I am lucky though that he did not bite me. It seems that thet have a very hard time with bananas,, now they are pretty much goo and I put it in their food when they get them.

Hmm... Okay. I won't worry about him unless he acts strangely today. I guess
i was playing with fire, and I didn't even know it.

Re: Heart Attack Number 2 Today

sounds like he needs his banana cut into smaller pieces. Think little kids and hot dogs.

Re: Heart Attack Number 2 Today

If you have to pry his mouth open I recommend you use a wooden dowel (I use the broken handle from my meat tenderizer) as a block so you might get scraped, but wont lose a finger. Just make sure you don't trust the wood entirely, Zoa (Bearded Dragon) took off my finger tip because he wasnt fond of me shoving my fingers down his throat.

That's what these were, a slice cut into fourths. That's why it freaked me out. I think next time it will just become mush. Ha, try to choke on that, Don Iguan!

Lacey, good advise. I hope I'll never have to use it again, but knowing him, I better keep it in mind. He's scarred me once. Not in a big hurry to repeat that.

On a brighter note, he was still all green this morning. I'm unused to that. He came to me pretty much orange, and has stayed that way or grey since I got him. This green tinge is a welcome change.
