Everyone says hot rocks bad news but this would seem to be a bit safer, it also has the advantage of being adjustable. These are made for small dogs and the cord is armored so it can't be chewed, the temp adjustment requires you to hold down a touch section for a minute before it goes into set mode so I don't think the igg could reset the temp accidentally. It only activates fully when it has weight on it. The temperature defaults to 100 degrees but it can be decreased down to 80 degrees in one degree increments. This is also weatherized for outdoor use, they're made for convalescing dogs or for dogs outdoors in the winter to have a warm spot to lay down.

If I was an igg I shure wouldn't want to lay on some old lumpy rock I'd want a nice flat warm surface like this. The surface is plastic not plaster so that by itself is going to limit how warm it can get. The only thing I don't like about it is if you set it below the default temp and the power goes off it doesn't have memory, i.e. it goes right back to the default 100 degrees.

i don't think it would be horrible but iguana's are top heated in the wild. they have the 3rd eye to go into and out of the heat so bottom heating isn't the best for them they should have above heat... i don't know maybe if you had both it would be fine but I don't think you really need both.

When my iguana was little I had a ceramic bed for him that when under the heat lamps it would warm up and be cozy for him he loved it even if it wasn't under the heat lamp he would try and lay on it. plus it never got really hot hot.

Are you considering this as the sole source of heat? The problem with such a device is it does nothing to heat the environment itself.

No it would not be the sole heat source but he's currently in an outdoor enclosure and it's a rather big one (6 by 4 foot x 6 tall) so I'm having a little trouble figuring out how to heat it well--I borrowed this pad from a friend and he seems to enjoy it well enough (even though he seems to be having a little problem remembering where to find it lol). In florida there are only a handful of days when it gets below 60 at night. You may have read about the 30 nights we had recently when the cuban iguanas in miami were falling out of the trees it was so cold--the person I got my new friend from had him outside during those days (he thought the hot rocks were enough.....grrr glad he's mine now) and for a little bit he thought he'd died in the cold but actually he'd just gone into suspended animation...poor baby I would never leave him outside in that temperature even with sufficient heating! I try not to leave him out there if it's supposed to go 50! I saw a place in clearwater that had a cage of a similar size but the big difference there is they had a fully wood roof where my cage has screen so I'm going to have to find some way to enclose it for the cold months. The big cage I saw had three big giant sized infrared lamps in the top of the cage, which I question if just that could produce enough heat to keep the three monster iggs they have in there warm I also have the bottom half of a large dog crate in there for him to hide in and the mat is in there, I suppose I could find a way to mount some lamps inside the "cave".

is this a green iguana? I would have the heat pad on a high shelf with heat lights on top if possible I have never seen my iguana go down to sleep unless he is too warm or the light is still on and wants to go in the dark.

My Grizzly sleeps on the floor of his cage,, he climbs all the way down and goes to the same spot in the back corner. All iguanas are different in captivity.

Mine sleeps on this little fake grass plant I got him. They are definitely all different.

Personally, I'd skip the heating pad. It's not going to do much for your ig, and it's not a good source of heat instead of lamps. If you're concerned about a cold night, a better solution would be to get him a small enclosure inside the house that he could be brought into just to sleep. If he's only going to spend the night in it, something smallish would be just fine.

Have you looked into ambient heat panels? That might be a good solution for supplemental heat for you.

Thank you for all the replies. I think mine is of the "up high" persuasion, yes I'd considered making him a platform in the top of the cage, probably some light plywood would do it, right now his favored place to sleep is up high. I made him some stuff to climb on made from some long thin (inch thick pieces of board, I think they're really door framing materials, that I wrapped in natural rope (attached with staples only on the underside so he doesn't get scratched on the staples). He climbs up as high as he can and just stays there all night long. On the cold windy high 50's days we had recently he stayed inside the "cave" with the hot mat for two days straight, I was a little concerned about him....he looked at me with that "what the heck do you want? Are you going to try to eat me now?" look when I lifted up the cave to see where he was. The cage is in my patio protected by trees overhead and three walls it really doesn't get windy in there at all, I was thinking of getting some big silver tarps that should help reflect the heat lamps back inside and enclosing at least the top of the cage with the silver tarps for the cold times. I looked at those heat panels but aren't those really made for glass cages? His cage is pcv covered with hardware cloth and I'm a little worried the panels would heat the metal mesh too much and perhaps burn him. I also saw those ceramic things that radiate heat but I have a situation with how much power I can supply in that area, I'm probably going to have to pay an electrician to install some outside outlets that are on a different circuit (old 50's house, whoever wired it was drunk, there is no ryme or reason for what outlets are on the same circuit and you can easily trip a circuit for out in the garage by turning on the blender in the kitchen on the other side of the house, LOL). It's January now, most of the colder weather is behind us so hopefully it won't get cold again and I'll have some breathing room to figure this out. I think he was somebody's house lizard, he doesn't seem to know a lot about an outdoor cage and when he's indoors he's very content to lay on the bed with me and sleep the whole night without wanting to run around, very laid back guy he is.
