Power outages?

As winter is fast approaching and our weather is threatening to be as awful as it was last year (we had a really bad storm last night) I am thinking about preparing for the eventuality of power outages. We were lucky last year and with all the storms we had we didn't lose power once. However it could happen so my question is how can I keep my iguana warm enough if we were to be without power for any length of time?
Any ideas?

Re: Power outages?

a small generator? I have a generator that runs all their cages in my house, plus many other things.
If not be sure to move the animal to a room that you are heating with some kind of heater.

Re: Power outages?

I would suggest a Generator.
But there is also another option of an Inverter.
An Inverter Is much cheaper and runs from a car battery or a deep cycle battery.
It supplies a limited amount of energy so make sure you buy the right size or it wont work.
Check your total watt required and that would be your minimum size of inverter and generator.

We had a power outage for 7 days this past winter.
So I connected the generator and an inverter to my Bearded Dragons and My Ig enclosures and also our enclosure to keep us all warm.

Good luck hope you dont have any power outages.
P.S.
Make sure to get some gas cylinders and petrol aswell as the pumps dont work without power.

Have a look at camp shops and big hardware stores.

Re: Power outages?

I have a 'process' for bad weather. We live off of the 'grid' so if the power goes out we are a bottom priority.

Step one- Unplug all of the heaters and lights and cover cages with sleeping bags to trap in any heat.

Step two- if the power is out and the cage temps drop below 'normal night time temp' they get moved into the living room by the fireplace.

Step three- if the power is going to be out for days I can bring pets to work (on the grid, near a retirement communities and hospitals so it is a high priority to get the power back on) or take them to my boyfriends house, he also is in a good high priority spot.

Step four- if all else fails the neighbors have generators and don't mind the lizards as long as they stay caged so I can usually pay for them to board them.

If there is any doubt that i'll be able to get them warm enough for digestion I don't feed them to prevent them from filling up with undigestable food. I figure they wont be eating if i'm moving them around anyway.

This is what i'm planning on doing if our power ever goes out. *knock on wood* we have never lost power. All our power lines are buried so I don't have to worry about trees or wind knocking them down. I also have lots of friends within an hours drive in all sorts of areas that would watch them for me. I keep my spare 20 gallon empty for just this emergency.

Re: Power outages?

Even your buried power lines aren't safe if you've got trees, a wind storm took down a friends tree and jammed a branch about 6 feet into the ground right through the power and phone lines...it was a mess! Most of the branch is still in the lawn, rather than pull the whole thing out they made the lines take a detour.

Re: Power outages?

Yeah, I know its not fool proof, but the chances are much less likely. It didn't even go out during hurricane Isabel and half of Maryland was out of power.
