A BLUE iguana?!
ok- I've seen many-an-iguana in my day. I've got the rescue set up to house as many as 12 adults at one time- only because i've had that many on more than one occasion....
Yesterday- we picked up an iguana that was found running at someones work. For one thing- he's the friendliest iguana we have EVER EVER had. he is so trusting he doesn't try to hold onto you, he just lays in your arms and closes his eyes while you pet him. now- the blue part... His face is blue, down his back and his spikes are blue, his tail is blue. On his sides, about 1/2 way down the side of his belly and then down underneath him- on his belly is green.... Everywhere there should be green- is blue. Its like a smokey baby blue color- but definatly blue..... I don't have a camera so I can't take pictures of him but I will try and get my mothers camera over here and take a few... any ideas on why he's blue? I'm not very 'into' the different species or iguanas- for rescues- an iguana is an iguana- and they're all either green or... well.. brown but supposed to be green... I didn't know if that was something special or not... Thanks! Beth |

Re: A BLUE iguana?!
Here's a link to the Blue IguanaRecovery Program. Take a look at some and see if they compare to yours. They are an extremely threatened species native to the cayman islands.

Re: A BLUE iguana?!
nope.
He is very close to that color though- it's a bit lighter than that color. The jowels and head structure on the Cayman Blues isn't even close. The one I have is a male, has the big jowels, looks just like a regular ol' green iguana... but he has a muted blue color to him- the color is very similar to the Cayman Blues but they cayman blues have a different head and body from regular igs.... I guess I just got my hands on a really cool lizard- he may become a permanent educational critter..... we've not had him long and he let my son pet him- no problem. we'll see... Thanks Beth (and those cayman blues are really awsome looking critters! Thanks for sharing that with me) |

Re: A BLUE iguana?!
Green iguanas can come in a few different colors. Though typically green, they can range to more yellowish colors, blues, reds, and blacks. However, the color range is usually slight, with green still being the dominant base color. I have seen a few specially bred "blue iguanas", as well as red ones. They're not that common in captivity and not likely that common in the wild either. I've seen captive ones with much blue like you described, though not with as much as yours.
I couldn't find any pictures of blue green iguanas, but here's some various other color varieties: red http://www.ajanimalfarm.com/images/Red_Iguana.jpg bluish Flickr Photo Download: Iguana iguana speckled Iguana on Flickr - Photo Sharing! spotted Iguana on Flickr - Photo Sharing! blackish Godzilla on Flickr - Photo Sharing! It could also be a combination of his natural unusual color and a nutritional issue of some sort. Perhaps if he got more vitamins and minerals and shed he'd gradually turn more green? That's just a possible guess on my part.

Re: A BLUE iguana?!
I took him outside for a bit today- it was quite warm- 85 something or other in the sun- he brightened up quite a bit. he is VERY close to the color of the "bluish" picture you posted.
He does have a calcium issue- his mouth looks like he was on his way to some bad mouthrot or Metabolic Bone Disease. - which I think is odd seeing as how othewise healthy he is. He's very... clingy- like a sick kid. He was out for around 4 hours today- when I put him back in his cage he flipped out and jumped back out of hte cage on me before I could shut the door... needless to say- i think he'll be spending several more hours out and about. He wants to be with people- its the wierdest iguana we've ever had here.... and those red igs are amazing- so were the others- like the spotted one... I would love to see some of those! anyway- i think hes just a really cool green. hes neat. Thanks for the help and I loved those pics. Beth |

Re: A BLUE iguana?!
I have a sometimes "blue" green iguana which sounds much like yours. In the summer when Zair gets a lot of outside time he gets very blue and turquoise. This picture was taken last summer. He goes back to green after a couple of weeks being back inside for cool weather and depending on how the season is or if we have another ig in the house depends on the amount of orange he has. This year it's been very little.
