Re: Mega Ray is here! Need Help!

The silver shiny dome are simple shop lights from a hardware store. They DO NOT have heating elements, only light bulbs for the plants.

Here is an amazon.com link you may find useful.
Amazon.com: Exo-Terra Glow Light Porcelain Clamp Lamp & Glow Reflector: Home & Garden

The 5.5 inch dome probably isn't deep enough. The 7" one should do fine.

Where exactly ARE you located?

Re: Mega Ray is here! Need Help!

I have been using a MegaRay for over a year and use it in a large dome fixture (with ceramic socket). I bought mine at a pet store (I think it's a 10 inch). If the pet stores around you don't carry them, why not order one off the net (make sure it's not a dimmable one)? Try here: Dome Fixture

Here's a picture of how I have it on top of my ig's cage.

Re: Mega Ray is here! Need Help!

I bought a 100 watt Self ballasted bulb ( looks like a floodlight bulb). The cage has a ceramic (porcelain) light fixture to screw the bulb into. All I really need is a reflective dome (like a lampshade). The problem is finding one that doesn't have the socket attached. I wonder if I could make one out of thin sheet metal and cut it into a cone shape?

Re: Mega Ray is here! Need Help!

i don't think you need a reflective dome. Just any old dome will do. Check with your local hardware store for a simple shop light. If there is no chance your ig will get burned then you might not need one at all. Try it out. Its the ceramic fixture (which you have) that is the important part. I'm assuming it points down into the cage but I don't want to assume anything.

And wow. Nanaimo B.C. is a world away. Is there a ferry over to Vancouver?

Re: Mega Ray is here! Need Help!

I can't tell if you're teasing me for over exaggerating or agreeing with me but yes there is a ferry over to Vancouver!!! I feels like it's a world away when you can't find a supplier for the simplest thing. Thanks for listening to my ventings!

Anyway I ended up calling the company and they said the dome was to reflect the heat downward so the fixture is fine and there is no way he can get to it to get burned. I'm just waiting now for my son to come over and help me get it in. I'm so excited to see how he will react to it.

He's doing so great even since I adjusted his diet. He has completely shed, gained a little weight and looks fantastic. I'm just hoping the infusion of UVB's won't make him any more ferocious than he already is!!!

I've been taking pictures of him and will post some as soon as I can.

Re: Mega Ray is here! Need Help!

no, i'm not teasing! It seems like a world away!

I would still try to keep my eyes open for a dome. Like I said, simple shop light from any old hardware store.

Make sure whatever you are shining through (if anything) has holes of 1/4 inch or GREATER. Glass won't allow ANY uvb to penetrate.

Glad your guy is doing better

Re: Mega Ray is here! Need Help!

The lights are separated from the critter by wire mesh (1/2 inch I think) so he won't get burned and the rays shine through. I just have to wait for my son til tomorrow now (pout).

I was thinking today that maybe I could line the lighting hood with that kind of adhesive insulating foil like they use around furnaces. I don't know what it's called. That might protect the wood the hood is made of and reflect the better. Heat isn't really a problem for me though.

Re: Mega Ray is here! Need Help!

"A world away" o Liz makes you practically my neighbor, i'm in Spokane, WA.

While you are taking pics of Critter you should show us the hood with the fixture so we can see how it is all set up.

If you decide you need a reflective hood and one that is 8.5inches across will fit I could probably find one around here to ship to you, we have more hoods and defunct lamps than we know what to do with.

Re: Mega Ray is here! Need Help!

Thank you for the offer, Lacey! I will remember that if it seems like we need one.

The light finally got into the cage today!!! Yeah!!!

Now for another question. How many hours per day of UVB do you give them?
We've been giving 10-12 hrs. Anybody do different?
