Critter update and humidity?

Thanks so much to all of you who gave me suggestions for taking better care of Critter. He is doing better although his sleep pattern is still messed up. I have ordered a new UVB light (Mega Ray)which should be here any day. I can't wait for it to get here and I'm excited to see what it will do for him! I have made some adjustments to his diet and am feeding him at the same time everyday. He has gained some weight I think and has gone through a major shed - he's almost a whole new iguana. He looks great!

Anyway, he needs more humidity. Does anybody have ideas for incorporating humidity into his habitat. It's a 4ft x 4ft x 2ft enclosure with a linoleum floor.

I just went in to check on him and he's dumped his water dish over and soaked all the fresh clean newspaper on the floor. i guess that's one way to get more humidity!!

Re: Critter update and humidity?

What are the walls of his enclosure made of? Dizzy's cage is screen, we covered most of it with plastic, i helped a lot.

You could also give him soaks in the bathtub and get one of those garden sprayers (like this) to mist him with. You could use a hand sprayer, but your arm might go numb!

Re: Critter update and humidity?

His walls are plywood (painted) and there is a safety glass door. On top there is a hood that has the lights mounted in it and it is separated from the rest of the cage by wire mesh. When he was younger he used to climb up onto the light fixtures. He never got burned miraculously, but we tried many things before we separated him from the lights altogether.

I do let him soak in the tub regularly and I have tried spraying him, but I thought they needed the air around them to be constantly humid.

Re: Critter update and humidity?

Just remember that humidity in an enclosure will always try to equalize with the humidty level in the room. If it can escape from the enclosure it will eventually become the same humidity as the room. Either you have to add water consistently or seal the enclosure more to prevent loss.

In the wild the humidity will rise and fall. It will not be a constant.
That said you can periodically spray down the enclosure with water. You could also get a humidifier. You can get a warm air vaporizer pretty cheaply but you will have to have it so the outlet is out of reach as the steam coming out is very hot. Some people use misting systems similar to the drip irrigation systems used in plants.

Re: Critter update and humidity?

what about adding plants? Even just a large potted one in the corner. Dirt retains moisture. Might pretty the place up too.

Re: Critter update and humidity?

Not an option.
Potted plant + Iguana = Big mess and shredded plant.
