Re: The Internets Longest Thread

Okay I must confess,,, I did one ofthe most STUPIDEST things I have done in a long time. Here ia the scenerio. This weekend Oscar stepped on Alexix's tail and broke part of it. It did not fall the rest of the way off, or should I say she did not drop it. I called the emergency care clinic in Seattle, spoke to one of my vets there,, he is very good. He states no huge emergency, it can wait till Monday , phew thank god...... So today rolls around and I have to take Pirate the one eyed cat to the vet here to re check his eye. I talk to him about Alexis. He says he can do it. So my gut instinct tells me NO NO, but how hard can the removal of a tail be, Not hard, Remove the tail, give me some antibiotics and fluids and I wil be on my way. WRONG, boy was I wrong!

He removed part of thetail and was picking and digging to get it to bleed,, I tried to tell him find the healthy tissue and cut there, He just kept digging,, He ended up leaving a lot of dead tissue, stinky tissue might I add. He then went to give her a shot of antibiotocs as I requested and gave it to her in the remaining of her tail,,,,,,, I just about fell over. I said that he was wrong we disagreed for a while and asked where I wanted the fluids placed,,
I went outside for a minute and he stitched it closed Stitched dead infected tissue closed .............
Okay I left there feeling like a total A!@#@!@#@,,, not only did I put her through this ridiculous thing,, I know I am now on my way to Seattle to see th exotic vet,,,, I just couldnt wait to get there to have them chew my butt! Yeah,,,, Well they were easier on me then I expected, Thank God! They did the rest of the amputation, gave me the shots of antibiotiocs and fluids and sent me on my way ,, Now I thank God my normal vets like me and have a good sense of humor. They thought I deserved the huge bill from the first vet,,, and I did!! Lesson learned the hard way.

Moral to this story ALWAYS LISTEN TO YOUR GUT INSTINCTS AND NEVER TRUST ANY REGULAR VET TO DO A SIMPLE PROCEDURE!

I knew better than this, Ireally did,,, man this makes me so mad at myself,, I gues that I can use my one stupid moment excuse for the year,,, This one takes the cake in all my stupid moments!
Ughh I frustrate myself...............................

You are not the one that deserves the butt chewing, the other vet does!
You are a lay person, granted more experienced than most but still a lay person. You are not a vet, where as this man is (allegedly) a trained medical professional. It sounds to me like he is taking on responsibilities and charging large sums of money for services when he has no idea what he is doing! The other vets should be doing the chewing on HIM!

Re: The Internets Longest Thread

thats just a terrible vet, normal or not. Any vet should know that all dead tissue gets cut off. Thats just basic knowledge. Heck I KNOW THAT and i'm an artist, not a vet!!! I've seen enough animal planet emergency vets. Not exactly the best learning tool, but it will educate you on the basics~!

Re: The Internets Longest Thread

Yes, I see your point..... However I also knew that he was not a herp vet. He is an EXCELLENT dog/cat and farm animal vet. I will definately keep taking the cats I am rescuing there,,, but I will not take my normal crew anywhere again,,, ever,,, that is not a herp vet. I was just trying to save myself the miserable drive on I 5 through rush hour traffic,,, well I ended up hitting it going there and coming back,,, and all I could think was I guess I deserve this,, lol.
As far as the vet, my exotic vet will have a polite and professional phone call with him. But once again I must add he is an Excellent cat/dog and farm animal vet. It is only something I can blame on myself.

Re: The Internets Longest Thread

Still the point is he should NOT be performing procedures that he is not qualified for! He may be doing the same thing to other people's pets who don't know any better and causing the death of their animal.
And he is just as capable of making a phone call to consult with someone who DOES know the procedure!

Re: The Internets Longest Thread

I wouldn't have paid any vet bill that involved me having to go to another vet to fix the first one's mistakes. Neither should you! He should have never told you he would perform a procedure he did not know how to do on an animal he was unfamiliar with. That's dangerous and could have killed her.

Go ahead,,, if it will help someone learn from my mistakes,,, be my guest.

I just posted it because it is something that people will learn from, and it also keeps people in touch with the fact that just because you have been doing something for years,,, you will still make mistakes,,, as I did. Believe me it is a hard way to learn and at the expense of Alexis! However today she is doing much better and she does not stink up my living room anymore. It is amazing how quickly dead tissue starts to smell. I think she may forgive me,, but I gave her half of a papaya as a treat this morning,, and to ease my own guilt. She ate all of it Her appetite has already perked up and so has she.

Here is the issue though,,, she is tub trained, well she cant get wet, naturally,, so this ought to be interesting. I am going to try to put her in the tub dry,, hopefully it will work.

Another part that got me was he charged me 25.00 for one shot of Baytril and 1 injection of fluids. He also wanted me tp bring her back in everyday to so he could give her the shots and watch her tail. 25.00 a day for shots,, thats crazy. At my herp vet I pay 4.80 for a BAG of fluids, not one injection,, and I pay 16.80 for a two week supply of Baytril. So there I paid 15.00 bucks for one fluid injection and 10 for one Baytril shot.......... Ridiculous.

But with the cats he gives me awesome deals,, very confusing!

Re: The Internets Longest Thread

Thos prices for fluids and shots don't sound too bad to be honest. We charge $18 for a baytril injection and $25 for fluid therapy. Running a vet clinic isn't cheap.
Granted if you do it yourself it is cheaper, but you can't blame a person for tryin to support themselves. A lot of people have real issue with vet bills, they think we should be cutting them breaks because we know them or whatever, but it helps pay my bills.

Re: Unpleasant Vet Experience

18 dollars for one Baytril injection. What if they need to be on it for two weeks? So would the prescription be 18 dollars for each injection that they need? I think that must be the difference between the dog/cat vet and the herp vet. I have never paid that before, ever. even before anyone knew me. The clinic in Seattle is a specialty center, morelike a hospital,, the place is huge. I dont get too many price cuts there (thats where I took her) I do get some, not a whole lot, from my day herp vet. With me it is not the money, I pay my vet bills,, I had just never experienced something that high ever, when I get bags of the stuff for next to nothing. All in all my vet bill for her last night was spendy, but that was walking in the door, and the rest of the amputation.
