more about Critter's sleep habits

So now it's almost 11 PM, his light is out; just his heat lamp(infrared) is on and he is wide awake. He has never done this before. Usually as soon as the UVB light goes out he is asleep like a baby. I am going to get a new UVB tomorrow. Hope that makes a difference.

Is it the red heat lamp? That puts out light? Has this been there all along or is this a new addition.
The packaging claims that reptiles don't see the red light but I am not so sure. When I used them they sure acted like they could see it and I have heard other people say that the bulb's light bothered their animals. I prefer the non light emitting ceramic heat emitters.

i have a dark blue light, and my frogs don't act like they see it. It certainly puts out less visible to me light rays than the red.

Re: more about Critter's sleep habits

I've used a red light at night with several reptiles. Two never seemed to mind it at all, but both iguanas seemed to have problems with it. I switched to a plain heat emitter at night for all my reptiles and it seems to be working really well. Maybe not as cool if you want to observe them at night, but it definitely seems to help their temperament.

I would definitely switch to a non-infared bulb with any iguana. They are not nocturnal, so if they're still awake during the night, it's not healthy for them, and they get really cranky, really fast.

Re: more about Critter's sleep habits

The "night light" is an infrared heat light. Same brand we've always used and the same type of bulb. We've never had any problems like this before so it seems like he is reacting to some sort of change. The only big change is his new cage and we used his same lights in the new cage.
Anyway I am going to change both of his lights today and skip a feeding for today and then feed him first thing tomorrow morning to see if that will get him back on track. I was out of town all day yesterday and he had missed his feeding, so when I got home he was asleep at 9 PM. Unfortunately I had to wake him up and feed him so I could clean up a poo mess so that got him going and he is sound asleep now at 11 AM.

It sure is nice to have someone to bounce these ideas (and problems) off.
I really appreciate the input.

Re: more about Critter's sleep habits

If it's a cage change, it could be that simple. He might just be adjusting to the new cage. They do that. As has been pointed out to me before - once he gets used to his new environment, he'll likely be right back to his grouchy, demanding little self.

Let us know if his strange behavior continues.

Re: more about Critter's sleep habits

Having a new cage would definately throw him off sequence! Iguanas get set in routines and do not like change!
