Kermit or Kerma?!
I have had my iguana for 6 months now. And I am not sure if it is a he, or a she. I think it is about a year old.. based on the size he was when I got him him I think he was about 6 months old.
I was wondering when the femonal pores start to be more noticeable- i can see his... but they are small but I don't have a few to compare and even if I did I don't know how old he is exactly. or when his face plates and head start growing more.. his spikes are growing but I have none to compaire with. He is growing really quickly... he has shed 6 or 7 times in the last 6 months... and has changed alot in looks. I am wishing him a boy right now hence the name kermit. (i don't want to deal with her getting egg bound) and I don't want to get it probbed because it sounds like it wouldnt be comfortable.. sence I can just wait it out... i don't wanna though haha any help would be nice |

Re: Kermit or Kerma?!
Well it seems you may have to wait a little while longer, it takes most iguanas at least til 1 1/2 yrs to 2 yrs of age before sexing is possible. And probing is not suggested for an iguana ...not even sure it would work for one. I heard about a place that does DNA testing but I would think that could be costly....good luck!

Re: Kermit or Kerma?!
I agree that it is probably a bit early to tell. You might post some pictures and some of the folks here could take a guess. You will need close ups of the femoral pores as well as side shots of the tail and head.
And iguanas are not probed. That is a procedure more appropriate to snakes.

Re: Kermit or Kerma?!
You expressed concern about your iguana being a female because you don't want to have to deal with her becoming egg bound; however, you should do some reading about male aggression. Males can become extremely aggressive and dangerous.
With iguanas you don't escape breeding issues.

Re: Kermit or Kerma?!
oh I know. i've read alot... I know about the aggression and such...
I weighed my options before getting an iguana. so either way I am willing to care for them.. egg bound or angry. so far so good |
