Unfortunately live plants in an iguana cage just isn't practical. Trust me, many ig keepers have tried it. What the ig doesn't eat will be trampled and destroyed. Even artificial plants don't really hold up well and the artificial critters are sure to be attacked. Iguanas tend to be attracted to foods by color and anything colorful will end up in its mouth and possibly swallowed.

Hello kendalle,

I use fake plants and have no live in any of my enclosures because if they are live and poisonous I worry that they will eat those, and another fact I cannot grow anything live indoors LOL, I also use logs, lots of them, some rocks (giant ones) or should I say boulders! I probably would not go with the fake lizards or such in worry that they would stress themselves out and feel threatened and try to eat them, but then again all mine are pretty egotistical and think they are the kings and anything else in their enclosure might give them a complex. LOL

Merlin does have a good point and I should have also mentioned that my fake plants are hung from the roof of their enclosures in spots they cannot reach. I however have had a few lunge at them and have had to remove them, apparently they thought they were Tarzan only it did not work so well for them (laughing hysterically now)

yea, i know they eat and trample them, i was hoping to get 4ish and rotate, he can eat what he wants and then when they look bad I can take it out and put in a different one... and maybe get a hybiscous (they are safe and well liked and hardy) that sits on the floor and goes all the way up his cage... hed like crawling in the bush..

Another problem with live plants is the potting soil. Most commercial mixes contain perlite and vermiculite which the ig could swallow leading to impaction. You also have to be careful of what the plant has been sprayed with in the way of pesticide or fertilizers.

He can still eat that, Kendalle. If you really think you need live plants, put large rocks (bigger than your ig's head)over the soil so the ig can't eat the rocks or soil.

Yeah i'm going to rain on your parade as well. I use silk Ivy and it holds up well but I couldn't imagine giving Dizzy a live plant, it wouldn't last 5 minutes with him.
