bottom line... if it's small enough to get in their mouth, it's large enough to cause serious problems.

Coconut fiber isn't going to easily digest, and if it's large chunks it will lead to impaction.

I would definitely shy away from ANYTHING that they can get into their mouths. Sand is fine and tiny just like coconut fiber and it can still cause an impaction.

I like using tile or linoleum for the potty trained lizards and newpaper for those that aren't (easier clean up) If you want something with a little color you can cut a few peices of indoor outdoor carpet to fit the bottom of the cage, just make sure there aren't any loose frayed edges.

i figured it would feel better to him because it was more natural, and sand cant be broken down because it is rocks, and not organic... i will take it out I guess it makes for really easy clean up though just take out his clup of poop..

Yes, but with that clump of poop came copius amounts of fluid that have already soaked into the surrounding coconut fiber, it's impossible to know if you have got it all.
Rather than worrying about the poop mess i'd focus on potty training him, its much more convinet and easy to change a tub of water than disinfect a whole tank everyday.

Lacey is absolutely right. It's a TON easier to disinfect a bathtub everyday than deal with leftover urates, etc in coconut fibers.

I used to have bark and I used to have some other substrates like soil and other dirt type stuff that was supposed to be good for him even if he did eat some of it. I just leave a bare wooden floor that is nicely painted now. i just put one or two peices of paper down in a corner and he does his business on that and that makes for easy cleanup as well. he just is constantly going in the one spot and all I have to do is wipe up a little bit off of where he pooped and change the paper. its awesome!!
